john deere 4010
my dad and i picked up a ('62 i think) 4010 diesel for a good price to fix up and maybe sell, its more or less all original, but well used. my dad thinks this one is rare because it has from the factory, no rockshaft unit(no 3 point hich). it has dual remotes, oil bath filter, originally wide front end, (but currently narrow, with original wide front end assembly ready to be put back on over the winter). my thought was that as a base model w/out 3 point hitch, its not worth as much, he thinks its rare-ish and a collector piece when restored and might be of interest the way it is. so, what is a 4010 like this worth? and would it be worth more if it had a functional rockshaft unit? thanks for the help!

Unfortunately not nearly as many people are looking for a classic tractor as a classic car, don't ask me why, and especially not in this economy. So don't expect to hit the lotto, classic tractors won't earn you a ton.

My dad and I both had 4020 tractors years ago and really liked them, My dads was a new purchase and mine was five years old when I got it. I don't think I would be interested in one without a 3PH though and doubt most people would be either.

These 4010 and 4020 tractors are peaking in prices now and selling for good sums of money. I wouldn't expect it to last more than a few years as the people buying for nostalgia are getting too old to play with them. You should participate in some of the "Vintage tractor" forums to get a better idea of what is more valuable to present day collectors.

We have 2 4020 diesels, a 69 & a 72. One is synchromesh and the other is PowerShift. They're very similar to the 4010. Lots of people around here still farm with them since they're pretty cheap for what you're getting and the spare parts market is good.

Of course it is rare, there are not many farmers that wanted a tractor w/o a 3 pt hitch.......then or now. They were more common out west where fields were bigger and the tractor would only be used for field work. It could also have been used for a construction use. Could you post some pictures? If it has larger than normal rear tires and clam shell fenders it would be what they called an Standard tractor (vs a row crop).

I think you are on the correct side. Not adding the 3 pt saved the original purchaser a few dollars, I think it hurt the collectability of that particular tractor. It is possible to add all the needed parts to make it a 3 pt but it would be hard to get your $ back. If it is a industrial 4010 it would be worth more as is. You need a serial number research. Contact Green Magazine or Two Cylinder Magazine. You will have to be a subscriber though.
