guys,
I have a 96-98? 6200. when it goes below 35F here it WILL NOT start. the block heater works good and i can leave it plugged in all night and it wont start. when it gets above 35-40 its like clockwork it will start up with no heater. whats the deal??? i have put a new fuel pump on it.. could it be the injector pump loosing prime or something??? if i do take this injector pump off can i get it out of "time"... i love feeding with this machine because it has a HEATER!!! any help would be greatly appreciated!

thanks

justin

Your profile has no location information so I'm not sure if the part of the country you are in has "winter diesel". Is it possible that you're hitting the gel point for your diesel? If so, get some Power Service anti-gel and cetane boost additive for diesel and add it to the tank.

Good Luck!

I do not think gelling would be an issue at 35*...

Does your engine have glow plugs or a grid heater in the intake? It sounds like a problem with either one of those...

A diesel mechanic once told me." There are only two things that will cause a diesel engine NOT to start,NO FUEL & NOT ENOUGH HEAT"

i have a 6400 that does the same thing, hard to start once temp drops below 32. I have to plug it in to get it to start I have installed a heater element on the fuel filter, where i push in the key to get it to work while i am cranking. But it takes alot to get it to start during cold spells.

A couple of questions. Does the engine crank when it is cold or are you getting no response from the starter? If it cranks, Do you get any smoke from the exhaust? If it cranks with no smoke, then you are probably loosing prime on the fuel. Be sure you check all the fuel lines between the tank and the fuel filter. The original fuel hoses on these tractors had a braided cloth covering that hides cracks and pin holes that come with age. If there is any place that can allow air into the system, the fuel can drain back to the tank and cause hard starting. You might also want to get an inline check valve to install in the hose to prevent drain back. Ask your dealer for part number
AL117189. If it isn't cranking at all or is cranking too slowly, you need to check out the battery, battery cables, starter, and starting circuits.

I think jd110 has the answer. At around 11-13 years of age, my Benz wouldn't start after I changed out the fuel filter. The problem was radial cracks in the rubber line between the solid line from the tank and the primary fuel pump. The cracks were allowing air to come in. These pumps don't pump air too well.

A diesel also needs air, check your air cleaner . Last winter I had frozen condensation in the bottom of my oil bath air cleaner. Case 580 would crank, lots of white smoke, would not fire. Removed the ice & it started immediately. Dirt in an oil bath or oiled fiber filter will reduce airflow in cold weather more than in warm weather. Combination of oil & dirt flows like grease in cold weather. Check / remove/ clean your air filter. MikeD74T

thanks for all the reply's... Yes it does smoke while it was turning over today... it just wont fire off... lots of white smoke. it wouldnt start today but my 5400 fired first lick.... it was only 35 today... I live in southwest VA... do you think the check valve would help that much???

If you are getting lots of white smoke, I doubt that the fuel is draining back. More likely the engine is simply not cranking fast enough or you could have low compression. Have you tried giving it a whiff of ether? Usually when a block heater is used, it should start just as easy in cold weather as in warm. If battery, starter and cables are good, maybe your transmission oil is too thick. When you do get it started in cold weather, do the hydraulics work OK? There is also a transmission oil heater available that works with the block heater to help prevent hydraulic drag on the starting system.
