I am looking at a 2007 6284 with 165hrs comes with FEL and 5' box scraper asking $9900 OBO. I asked my mechanic (works for local JD dealer) what he thought of this model. He told me he has worked on several of them and his biggest concern is the way the the loader attaches to the frame. Working the loader causes the bolts to loosen and eventualy strip out. His general comment was "they build a good lawn mower but when it comes to tractors they just aren't designed or built very well compared to other major brands. First question for ya'll... Ever seen or heard of this problem? Second...What do you think a reasonable offer is for this unit? Thanks for your help.

Your friend is correct about the bolts mounting the loader. I found the bolts on mine were working loose while performing routine maintenance. See http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/cub-cadet-yanmar-cuts/168739-important-maintenance.html.
I retightened them and now watch them very carefully. I'm not aware that this has caused any permanent damage though I'm sure it would have had I not discovered the problem. If you are aware of the issue and keep the bolts tightened I don't think you will have problems with it - just make it part of your maintenance.

What I don't understand is why there are no locking devices such as lock washers or bolts with serrated heads that would keep the bolts from working loose in the first place. Perhaps these loader mounts were dealer installed options and many of them missed the fact that locking devices are required. I am planning on looking more closely at mine when I have time to see what I can devise to keep the bolts from working loose. If locking washers are not suitable for that application I may even resort to the old drilled bolt heads and lock wire. I don't know if the original bolts are grade 8 but I think installing grade 8 would be another good idea.

One trick someone else suggested was using a small brush and some white paint to put a stripe across the bolt head and to the area next to it. That way you can visually inspect to see if the bolts have loosened.

If it were me I'd offer $6,500 and be prepared to walk away from anything over $7,500.00 - assuming it is the right tractor for you. Of course a lot depends on your local market for tractors like this and your particular needs. It's always best if you are prepared to walk out on anything but a great deal.

Thanks for your help, JN. Overall, how satisfied are you with this model? Any ideas about the seller's asking price?

I have been happy with my tractor so far. I purchased it with 12 hrs on it including the FEL for under $9,000.00. It was from a dealer liquidation and so I did not get a warranty with it. I use the tractor for mowing 3 acres with a 6' finish mower, trail mowing with a 4' bush hog, grading a 600' gravel drive, as well as using the loader and pulling a 5' x 10' trailer with fire wood from our woods.

Overall it has been reliable though I have found a couple of quirks. First, be sure you have the updated filter adapters and filters on the hydro (since you are looking at a 2007 model I'm sure you do). Second, you already know about the loader bolts - not a big problem since you are aware of it. Also check the front drive shaft - mine came loose and fell out. Third, you may likely encounter starting problems which can be easily remedied - see near bottom at http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/cub-cadet-yanmar-cuts/157287-cub-cadet-6284-power-take.html.

The parking brake has issues - see http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/cub-cadet-yanmar-cuts/162820-parking-brake-wont-stay-set.html. I adjusted mine but have never got around to installing some type of return spring so I have to reach down and pull the brake pedal back when I release it. Not a big problem, but annoying.

Also do not use the amount of engine oil recommended in the user manual when changing oil - you will overfill it by more than a quart. Instead install about three quarts, start the engine for a moment, and then check the level using the dipstick and top off.

Again, for what I bought the tractor for I have been satisfied. I would have had to pay almost twice what I paid to purchase similar in another brand. While I have had to perform a number of fixes none of them has been major. I've read the threads of other brands where people have had their share of issues also. If you are going to run rear mower decks or other rear equipment invest in front suitcase weights to improve front wheel traction - a good idea for any 4 x 4 CUT.

When Cub struck a deal with Yanmar to make their new models they dumped a lot of 6284's to move them from dealer inventory so there were some really great deals around for a while (mine being one of them). That really lowered the market value on them for a while and I'm not sure it ever really recovered so shop around to see what you can learn before you purchase. While the market value may be lower it also made it possible for me to purchase more tractor (virtually brand new) than I could have found used in any other brand.

BTW - You may have experience already with quick attach FEL's and this is something that is not unique to 6284's, but the following link might save you hours of frustration if you are not aware that sometimes you need to bleed the quick connect lines when hooking up - see near the bottom of http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/cub-cadet-yanmar-cuts/176491-quick-attach-bucket.html.

FF -

Jeff is right on with his eval. A few "quirks" with the machine, but what machine doesn't....and you will save several thousand bucks over a "more popular" brand. I have one myself, and haven't really started using it but will very soon. I would start the offer at "around" 7000, and go no higher than 8000ish. With that low of hours, if he's taken care of it & it's in nice shape, if he were to drop the price to 9000 or 8500 he'll most likely sell it for that. JMHO....

Good luck!
