6500 wont start after running out of fuel

I ran out of diesel after working a couple hours. put some diesel in, primed it by pumping the primer that you unscrew and push till you feel a lot of resistance, went to start it and the starter turns but it doesn't act like it is engaging with the flywheel. It is spinning too fast and no resistance. I also noticed that my horn isn't working. Is there some electrical component that could be out that would be keeping the starter from engaging the flywheel? Started fine this morning.

On a good note it is paid off as of April 1st Hopefully the repair bills don't start kicking in yet.

Weird coincidence. Rap the starter solenoid smartly and try again. Should kick in right away. If not dont give it time to rev up. Let it stop completely before each try.

Ok, you have the air out of the low pressure side of the pump. Next is the high pressure side, the injector pump and the lines to the injectors, the hand pump will never do that. You must loosen the lines at each injector and crank the engine in short bursts until all the air is out of the lines. Be sure that all the transmissions are in neutral.

I am just guessing here, you said your horn isnt working either, maybe you might has a bad fuse, but it puzzles me that the starter kicks in.

I don't think the engine is turning but I could be wrong. There is just no resistance so I figured it wasn't turning. Not sure if having air in the injector lines would do that. I was just assuming that it would be the same as changing the fuel filters but it must be different since it got air into it all the way to the injectors. This is the first time I've let it run out but I was trying to get all the old fuel through it since I hadn't used it much. I will try bleeding it out at the injectors.

It turns pretty fast though. Could the air still be the culprit? I know on some starters they need to energize a solenoid to move the starter against the flywheel so I was assuming that was it. Thanks everyone for the quick replies and keep the good info coming.

This is a BIG THANK YOU!!! I loosened the lines above the injectors and cranked the engine a few short times till I saw fuel. Tightened them back down and vrooom!! You guys are all awesome!

Side note: My tank will never go below 1/4 again.

Glad you got her going again. I try to refill mine at 1/2 tank.
