I'll have had my 6520 two years in January. I'm only a weekend (and evening after work) warrior but I love every excuse I can find to use it. Why didn't I like using my dad's tractors this much when I was growing up on the farm?

Anyway, here's my real question...recently I've been using my PHD for some pretty rocky post holes. At one point when I went to take the PTO out of gear, I disengaged the PTO with the lever, the PTO stopped, but I could not shift the PTO out of gear. I reengaged the PTO clutch and the PTO goes again. I've tried shifting the PTO out of gear several times since but to no avail. Right now my PTO is permanently on. Is there something dumb I'm missing? Or are there some troubleshooting tips I could try?

Thanks,
Rob

The big lever is the clutch lever, the small one shifts the gear. The small one wont move to its rearward position?? -- or will but it doesnt come out of gear??

First try lubricating all of the linkage joints. Just a thought.

The clutch lever works fine, when pushed up, the beeping starts and the PTO stops. However when the clutch lever is pushed up the PTO gear shift will not move to take the PTO out of gear.

Look under the tractor. There are 2 levers on the transaxle. One engages 4wd, the other the pto gear. Maybe it got bent or fouled by debris.

I felt and looked at the linkages under the tractor. I don't see any that look bent.

I had my 13 yr old son on the tractor moving the PTO clutch lever and attempting to move the PTO shift lever while I was under. So I think I understand how things are supposed to work.

The tractor was off. My son had put the PTO clutch lever up to the disengage position and was moving the shift lever and it did finally go out of gear. However now it won't go back in gear.

I disconnected the linkage from the shift lever right before it enters the tractor body. The shift lever then moves freely and doesn't appear to bind at all. The lever (or whatever it is called) that enters the tractor body will move some but is quite hard to move.

This was all done with the tractor engine off. Should I be able to put the PTO in and out of gear with the engine off? When I started the tractor engine, I could not use the normal PTO levers to put the PTO back in gear. Something is making it very hard to move the lever going into the tractor body. Is the transmission oil the only oil I need to be concerned about in regard to the PTO? The level there is fine.

I would appreciate any other ideas.

Thanks,
Rob

This may not be the problem as it may be internal, but I would try oiling the outside of the shaft where it goes into the transmission case. It would be nice if that solves all of your problem. I would try it.

Last time I went out and did all the disconnecting, etc., it still didn't work, even when I started the engine. But today I started it up, without doing anything else and shifting the PTO was working great. I used it all day, doing several post holes and everything went great. I have no idea what the problem was or what fixed it, but I'm sure glad it's working now. I have to admit that I like it a lot better when I understand what was wrong. Anyway, thanks so much for your help. Something in there did the trick.

Thanks,
Rob
