What is the differance between a JD 650 and JD 655?

Right off the bat, the 650 is a gear trator...I'm pretty sure the 655 is a hydro tranny.

Both machines have 2 cylinder diesels, however.

Roy, you are correct on the transmissions, but the 655 is a 3 cylinder diesel (both are Yanmar).
I think of the 650 as a small farm tractor and the 655 as a large garden tractor. The 655 replaced the 650. If you have any specific questions let me know as I have owned both models. Both great machines by the way.

Ken,

Did the 655 replace the 650? I thought they were both available during the same time with the 650 being the geared version and the 655 the hydro as you said.

Jeff,
The 650 was made from 1981-1989 and the 655 was made from 1986-1990 so there is some overlap in the manufacturing dates. It's just that they were two completely different styles of tractors and not just a transmission difference. The older 650 was an all metal design (yes even the hood) while the newer 655 used plastic components. Again as stated they were two different designs (I do not think they had any interchangeable parts) but both fine tractors. I seem to favor the style of the 650 because the 655 always looked too small to me and I did not like the location of the headlights on the rear fenders.

Thanks for the info, Ken.

I purchased a 755 in 1988 that's why I recalled the 650/655 models co-existed. I did not look at the JD product line again until a couple of years ago and replaced the 755 with a 4310 last summer.

That is correct, but then along came the 670 as well as the rest of the X70 series. At that time there were 2 distinct lines of tractors, the X50 and then X70 series which were gear tractors. They ranged from the 650 to 1050/670 to 1070. Then there was the 55 series hydrostatic tractors. They were the 655 to 955. The 55's were built much differently than todays HST tractors. The engines sat on rubber motor mounts attached to the tractor's frame, unlike the 50s, 70s, and most current tractors who's engines are part of the frame.
