Good solid BASIC utility tractors. Basic transmission, CAB, motor, 3-point hitch, etc. This is the last year they are being produced...they will be replaced by a new series of tractors next year.

every now and then there'll be discussion about 50+hp tractors around. granted, the CUT's are usually the talk of the town, but there are many members that come on here who own tractors with pretty good size hp. farmwithjunk, soundguy, and ddivina are 3 that come to mind right off and all 3 have something BIG in their barns.

I'm kinda middle of the road with the 5400. I use it like a CUT though. When I first got on here I was real confused just where that size falls category wise. Deere only rates the 5400 on the PTO ( 60HP ) but it seems all the CUT's are engine. A couple of yrs ago I was at the Louisville farm show and was looking at a new NH and I asked the guy what power it was and he quoted a number. I asked engine or PTO and he said engine of coarse don't know what the PTO power is. I'm like who ever heard of a tractor rated on the engine and no PTO rating.I thought it was drawbar and PTO only. I guess it makes for better sales numbers I eventually found someone who said the 5400 is about 70HP engine so I can get an apples to apples comparison.

it's my understanding by doing my own research and comparisons that the 5400 is the same as say a 5410, 5420, 5403(all around 70-75 engine hp). youre tractor falls into the middle of the Ag utilities i would think. thats a pretty good size tractor I would say. its no slouch by any stretch of the immagination thats for sure!

I looked at them recently before I bought my Case-IH tractor. They are a good basic tractor. The engine size is the same as use in the 6030 and 7030 series. The styling is a little dated but that is subjective. One of the biggest differences is the dry clutch vs the wet clutch of the others. Wet clutch will last long with harder use. Hydraulics are open center vs closed. That may not be an issue unless you need pressure/flow compensated controls which require close center. They also just don't have as many options. 3pt lift is reasonable at 4,828 lbs but not that high for the size of the tractor. Again may not be an issue for you. They seem like the typical ag tractor one would buy in the 70's. Lots of value for the HP and size.
