I'm going to purchase a Woods prd rear finish mower and would like a 7ft. but think a 6 footer would be better. My tractor is 35 hp but only 28 at the pto. I would be mowing about 6 acres with some hills

I'd say it's a toss up. I ran a 6 foot Landpride on my 3940, and I'm now running a 7 foot. The issue is dragging the weight up and down the hills. I would look and see what the difference is in weight. That's what I did it in Landpride it was 50-100 Lbs different if I remember correctly. The other thing to look at is the price of replacement blades. The 6 foot blades you can get aftermarket and are pretty reasonable. The 7 foot blades are OEM only and pretty expensive. I was looking for the biggest cut so I could maximize my cutting time.

I run a 7' rear finish mower on my 35 HP tractor.
It handles a 7' with no problem at all.

I have a Woods 6' PRD7200 on a 30HP/22 PTO HP and it handles it easily. It is more weight on the three point than recommended by the manufacturer but I don't raise it that often while mowing. Mowing on hills shouldn't be a problem if you don't have to lift the mower while on a hill. Per my Woods owner manual the PRD7200 (6') weighs 719#. The PRD8400 (7') weighs 830#. I think your tractor would not have a problem with the 7' mower.

I run a Woods PRD7200 6' on a 33hp/25.5 pto tractor and it handles it fine. One thing you should take into consideration is how uneven/even the terrain you'll be mowing on is. If you have very uneven ground than the wider the mower the more scalping you'll have as well as uncut grass, especially in narrow "dips" in the ground. Just another thing to consider.

I run the Woods PRD8400 on my L3940. Moves it around like nothings back there. I HIGHLY suggest you also purchase the center roller (optional, of course) that bolts to the front of the deck. I scalped the heck out of some areas until I realized they made this roller that keeps the deck from bottoming on low areas. It made all the difference in the world.

The 3540 will handle both mowers, but you will get a much better finish cut from the smaller unit.
