Hi All,

I am in the market for a new Bush Hog to pull behind my 5740C.

Bush Hog's add says you need 55 H/P minimum, I think the 5740 has about 49 or so at the PTO.

Are any of you guys pulling a 7 footer behind your 5740??

If so, are there any problems using it?

I am looking at a Bush Hog 297, any experience with these??

Thanks in advance!!

Ron

I have a 5740C and I'm running an 8 foot Dale Phillips brush hog type heavy duty mower behind it with no problems at all. They told me the 5740C was 51 HP at the PTO. I was also told that any bigger than an 8 foot mower would be too big for the 5740C.

Hi Ron, I'm pulling a 7 footer behind my 5740 with no problems. I would of went for the 8' like Unclebuck but I have some small gates to squeeze through.

I've geared down to handle heavy stuff with the 6 footer, and still taken a full swath. I guess if a 7 footer starts bogging the engine down, work it the same as any other mower, either lift a little, or cut down on the width of the swath. There's plenty of gears to work with, and when you start playing with the sub gears, Wow, It is amazing what you can accomplish. A bit tedoius. but what a workhorse.

I have an OLD 7' John Deere rotary mower that is a heavier duty model than the bush hog you described (it connects to the tail hitch and has its own hydrolic lift). Bought it used a year ago and it came with no manual or specs so if it had a minimum HP requirement, I never knew what it was but the guy who owned it had been pulling it with an old MF that was about 45HP so I figured I would be good to go.

I have a 4940 and cut some pretty serious brush on some hilly Ozarkian terrain with no problem. Regardless of what the minimum suggested hp may be, my guess is that you should be fine withthe bush hog on a 5740.

The gearing is good and the Mitsubishi deisels used in these Montana do seem to develop some good torque. I do work my tractor and for its size, never feels underpowered.

Well, I bought a new 7 foot Howse bush hog and cut with it today for the first time.
The 5740 handles it with no problem as many stated here.
I feel that an 8 foot would not be a problem either.

It sure is nice cutting 7 foot at a pass instead of 5 foot like I was doing before.

Thanks to all who offered help!!

I also have a 4940C and I regularly pull a 7 foot bush hog behind it going through some pretty heavy Texas brush. I also have a 5 foot bush hog that I use to mow along the fences. No problems with either one so your 5740 should mow along just fine.
Incidently, I too start my PTO slowly then ramp it up. It's a lot easier on the U-joints that way and it hasn't caused any difficulties.

I have a 2740 that I run a 5ft Howse on ... it seems to run it fine (and the dealer told me that it would also handle it without a problem) ... the bushog material says it is rated for a 25-40hp tractor so I am sort at the low end, but I take my time and the results are just great!
