I have the opportunity to borrow my cousins 7 ft wide land pride hog. I just purchased a L3901. Is this too much hog for my tractor to pull. If I used it I will be mowing on mostly flat ground. Thanks for any guidance.

It will be max for an L3901 but not too much on level ground, if it will fit.

Check to see if the LP 'Hog is Cat 1 or Cat 2. You cannot mount Cat 2 implement on the Cat 1 Three Point Hitch of a L3901.

(If you get the LP 'Hog model number from your cousin you can research hitch on LP's web site.)

If you go slow, you shouldn't have any problems. You want to make sure not to bog the engine down, so your speed is what makes the biggest difference. You have enough power to run the mower, just not enough to power through really thick stuff. It will also help if you keep the mower up fairly high while cutting. The lower you cut, the thicker it is and the more power it takes.

I run a 6 foot cutter with 30 hp at the pto. You have more power then I do, so the bigger mower should be right at the max of what you can handle. Ideally a 6 foot mower would be better if you where buying, but for free borrowing, you'll be fine.

If your L3901 is a HST you are right at 30 HP at the PTO. That Land Pride 7' cutter will spec out at 45 to 90 HP recommended. You will need to ballast the front of the tractor unless you have a FEL. If you have a FEL you can leave it on and will be able to keep the front end on the ground. If you are on flat ground and are cutting light grass and weeds you can run the cutter but you will probably need to run at a pretty slow speed. Watch your temps and don't run hot.

Jeff.... while I haven't found the model of the hog just yet.... I do know my cousin's MF1643 is a CAT 1 hitch. So I think its safe to say the mower is made for Cat 1. Of course I'll double and triple check that!

Turbys.... wow! 45-90 HP! My cousin must have got some bad advice when he bought that mower.... he bought new with his tractor which is just 43 HP gross!

The power to run is not gonna be the issue. You can go infinitely slow with the HST. And can always talk less than a 7' swath.

The issue is gonna be the size and heft of the 7' cutter. It sticks way back there, and is heavy. Do you know just what 7' cutter it is?

Looks like LP has several offerings.

A 2084 is a little over 1000#
A 2684 is 1400-1500# depending on dual or single wheel
A 3684 is 2000#.

And they also have a 1884 offset twin spindle mower under 1000#.

I think you are gonna struggle with a 1500 or 2000# version. And any of them are certainly gonna require the FEL to stay on to keep the front end down. My 3400 was the same basic frame. And with a 6' cutter @ a bit over 1000#, you could use one hand and lift the front of the tractor by the grill guard. And a 7' cutter moves the weight even further back

That number I pulled was from the Land Pride web site for their lightest 7 foot cutter. I don't know what cutter model specifically you are talking about though. Keep in mind that those are manufacturers recommended HP ranges for what they deem satisfactory performance. My Brown 472 cutter has a 120 HP gearbox, weighs 1060#, and I believe is rated for a minimum 40 PTO HP. The 7' Brown is rated for a minimum of 50 PTO HP but weighs more at 1375#. If your cousin was told he could run that cutter I hope that the sales person truthfully presented the facts to him.

It also has a huge amount of inertia. Be very careful engaging the pto and make your throttle changes slowly. I already slip the clutch at idle to get my 60 going.
