Tractor
Farmtrac 360 TLB
Got a lead on a factory built tandem axle all steel, bumper tow 7000lb GVW trailer. 2 - 3500 lb (ea axle) G.A.W.R. It has electric brakes on one axle. My tractor weighs 3050 net. It has a loader and BH so i figure its close to 4500 lbs. I'm not up on the built in safety margin, if one exists. I plan to tow with a 3/4 Ton pickup. Am I pushing my luck with this or is it safe?

Should be OK. I have a similar trailer though my tractor isn't as heavy. Figure 1500 pounds for the trailer, you've got 5500 pounds of payload capacity. Truck is fine to pull it. Secure it well, check those trailer brakes and you should be all set.

hey slack,
i have the same set up, mine is a 18' car hauler with a dovetail. i have a b3030 tlb im not real sure how much it weighs, the tractor weighs about 1850 lbs then add on for FEL and BH. i pull mine with a 1/2 ton but its a 10,500 capacity 1/2 ton gmc. i have not had a bit of trouble doing so, i just add some stoping distance and watch my speed.
have fun

Check your hitch rating and see if you will need to use a WD setup. My truck will pull a 5000# load with no WD and 8000# with a WD setup. More than enough for my trailers 7000# GVW . Take your tractors weight loaded 4500#s
add the trailers weight, usually around 1600#s and you would get 6100#s. Now add any extras (tools, chains, fluids, etc.) and you can get really close to the max. Make sure that your hitch, ball mount, ball are rated for that load. I see alot of people pulling loads with a hitch combo that is rated for 5000#s max and the load is a lot more. Also check the tires ratings. A lot of manufactures use the cheap trailer tires and are rated a little low. The industry is changing the way they factor the ratings due to the cheap tires. They will be deducting 6% from the total GVWs if they use the cheap tires starting September of this year.

Welcome to NATM

Be safe!

Most FEL's with bucket will push 1000 pounds or more and most BH's are at least that much. Do you have wheel weights or filled tires?

I would guess that you are at 5500# of tractor. That would put you right at the limit, or over depending on trailer weight. Probably safe, but only a trip to the local truck stop with certified scales (at 10-15 bucks) will tell for sure.

Looks like you've been provided with some good comments here on your question. The only thing I could add is that the weight of the empty trailer might be a little low. I have an 18 foot car hauler (7000#) with wooden deck and it weighs 2000 #'s. It is a factory model, built here in Albuquerque. I haul a MF 2310 TLB and pull with a 1/2 ton pu. Other than killing my gas mileage, this is a good setup.

Chile-etr,

Welcome to the board! I used to live in Rio Rancho (855 Everest ave). That was about 20 years ago and worked for Intel when fab 7 was the only structure there. It's a LOT different now!

That's funny! I worked at the Folsom site for years(born near Folsom). Wow!!! Has that area changed too!

In regards to the trailer... Weight is probably ok. FYI, my Carson brand 16' dual axle 7000lb rated trailer is 1600lbs.

In the tractor weighs 3050#, guessing your tractor must be 35hp, or >, 1200# for the loader, and 1200#, depending on your bucket sizes for the BH, you will be stretching the envelope with a 7000# GVW trailer; a 10,000# GVW trailer will remove all doubts and fears!@! If the tires are ballasted; it will be another issue.? If you are traveling the interstates with it, or just local distances; should work into your equations also? "Remember, experience is something that has happened to you; you wished happened to someone else!!" I've been there!

You will have a percentage ot the weight as tongue weight so you can figure that in there too. Scales would be a help for sure just to know exactly what you have. I think on a bumper pull you can go about 10% tongue weight so even on a low side, about 500lbs of the total loaded trailer weight will not be on the axles and tires.

I could be wrong and it wouldn't be the first time or the last but DOT would just check the axle weights, not the total trailer weight. As long as the rear axle of the truck is within limits and the axles of the trailer are within limits, you are at least legal.
