My 71 Ford 4500 backhoe has transmission fluid leak from transmission/motor interface.
Have tried Lucas oil stop leak to no avail.
The leak is really bad after the machine is warmed up and the revs up when digging.

Is my only option to separate the motor & tranny?
Is this possible with no garage or heavy lifting equipment?
Any idea how much something like this would be to have fixed?

Thanks for any help.

1. Yes.
2. Yes
3. Impossible to predict given available information.

Agree. I did it years ago in the yard on my 4500, but it was between the tranny and rear end to replace a badly leaking rear tranny seal. An experienced helper and I did it over two days, to replace a $16 seal. Have jacks and plenty of blocking and don't forget to wedge the front axle to prevent rotation. In my case, splitting behind the tranny, the weight of the backhoe wanted to tip the rear section over backwards, so make sure it is well blocked both ahead and behind the rear axle, then slide the front section forward (after removing the loader). What it costs to fix depends on what you find. And, for future reference, my seal went bad because the bolts that connect the rear end and tranny worked loose. I made sure that never happened again (regular re-torquing.)
