72\" MMM wheels

The left side wheels on my 72" MMM had to be replaced already. Just 80 hours on the tractor./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif At $60.00 each this is not acceptable./w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif While mowing today I noticed rear wheel was swing from side to side. Took tractor back to the barn to see what is wrong. Found that this wheel has little or no weight on it. The front wheel on the same side is caring all the weight. Tried to loosen up the arms on each side that hold the 4 wheels. There was no adjustment to shift more pressure to rear wheel. I have had problems with this wheel since I bought tractor. Wheel would freeze up after greasing. Dealer found that grease was pushing bushing out of wheel. First noticed because this wheel would drag in the grass and leave grooves because it was not turning.
Has anybody else had problems with the wheels on their 72" MMM?

Re: 72\" MMM wheels

I have been trying to get mine sitting on all four wheels also. I am starting to switch the whole units around to see if one is taller than the others. The problem is you need to have the deck hanging off the loader or somewhere to switch the deck wheels around. I will keep you posted on what I find out.

Re: 72\" MMM wheels

I, too, have always suspected that my 72" deck wheels are not level. Problem is, I dont really have any perfectly level ground to test it on. Ron, which of your wheels do you think rides too high and bears too little weight?

Sounds like my plan to build a barn with a level smooth concrete floor will make such tasks easier.

When seated on tractor, left rear tire is the one that has no weight on it. I may put this wheel in another hole to equalize the weight. I have attached a picture showing both worn tires.

Re: 72\" MMM wheels

From your photo, looks like the worn tire does not have a bearing (brass sleeve) in the center. This could be why its wobbleling.

The bushings (hardened steel) were removed from wheel to put in new wheel. Those busing will cost you another $20.00./w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif They do not come with new wheel./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif Thanks for noticing./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: 72\" MMM wheels

Seeing what new wheels are, I think I will start rotating mine if the swap that I did doesn't do anything.

Re: 72" MMM wheels

I have a little different problem with my Bush Hog 3-pt mower. All the wheels ride on the ground all right, but my yard's almost as rough as the pasture and of course going down into and up out of the borrow ditch along the road in front means that various wheels may be off the ground at different times. The wheels are just fine, but the (spindles?) through the wheels are just half inch bolts and I found the rear ones are wallowing out the holes in the (forks?) that they're mounted to. And the bolts themselves are wearing down. I'm going to have to get some new bolts before long and do some welding to fill in the wallowed out holes, then re-drill the holes. And of course I'm not sure of the terminology that Bush Hog uses for those parts.

Re: 72" MMM wheels

Ron,This is the way I set my deck up.On flat surface with the deck down I take a tape and measure the distance from the lip "bottom edge" of the deck to the floor,at all 4 corners. The front edge of the deck should be 1/4"-3/8" higher than the rear edge. This slight off-set allows the deck to take in more volume of grass and keeps the blades from "striping" the lawn, eliminating the off-set of the blades.I make the adjustment on the front center link. Now,I have found that at least on our deck, that the right rear caster was positioned per the chart, that corner of the deck was a little low.I dropped the caster 1/2" to the next setting, and that fixed it,all gauge wheels rolling on the turf. You can also fine tune the deck with adjustment to the rods that are hooked to the 3-point linkage.I set our up at 3" and I set the 3-point contol lever at about 5-6,this lets some of the weight of the deck be carried by the linkage, and not all on the gauge wheels. This is to my notion a very good deck,it takes a while to get it set-up,but once you're there,it does a fine jos of mowing.
