7200 Cub Cadet Compact Tractor

The reply stating the plug with 4.12 ohms is the GOOD plug is probably correct. I wouldn't energize the plug with any voltage for more than a couple seconds. Some manufacturers do various tricks with the plugs like the infamous GM 5.7 diesel used in Pontiac, Olds and Cadillac. The earlier models had 12 volt glow plugs but my 1980 Bonneville and 1982 DeVille used 6 volt plugs that were energized for only a few seconds by a controller. If the controller failed and didn't turn off in time you ended up with 8 burny-out glow plugs.

On my psd I used a probe light hooked up to the positive terminal. touch the tip of each glow plug if it lights its good.

I've got a 1998 Cub Cadet compact tractor 7200 4WD 20 HP diesel that all of a sudden has been hard to start. I turn the switch for the glow plug and the lite comes on and then when I engage the starter it spins and white smoke comes out the exhaust. I replaced the battery thinking it was the problem. After I repalced the battery it started the first time, but once it sat over night it would not start. The only way I was able to start it was to spray starter fluid in the air intake and it started right up. The glow plug light stayed on for about 20 minutes and then went out. Once it is started and is shut off it will start back up with no problem however the glow plug lite stays on for a while and then goes out. Any ideas where to start?

I know this is a very old thread, but I've recently bought a Cub 7200 & had the same problems. Simultaneously having the same issue with my Kubota in my skid steer, I resolved the Kubota by fixing the glow plugs (yay! No more starting fluid). Now... good luck finding the "proper" glow plugs for this mitsubishi engine. They have NGK plugs FROM THE FACTORY... think you can go direct-buy them from an auto-parts store? Or ebay? Or ANYWHERE? No.

After exhaustive searching, I found 2 options:

1) This $45 plug that can be bought as OEM-specific. Item description doesn't even include a free packet of lube, after $45 on a glow plug, so it's not worth your time.

2) Buy a "close enough" NGK plug from Advance Auto... (NGK 6628 Y107v) -- Advance Auto SKU: 20651126 --- UPC: 087295166284

The listed NGK plug has the same 10mm threads and 12mm hex head as the factory NGK Y724U and seems to be a good replacement.

Word of warning: The replacement plugs looked & threaded identically to the factory... until I got about 6-7 (or probably 15) revolutions screwed into the block. Then, they stop dead as though they've reached the end of their threads. I think the diameter of the heating element is ever so slightly larger than the factory part and prevents it from actually recessing into the head.

That all said, mine have been working just fine with that partial thread-in for several hours.

My next mod will be a direct-connected 12v momentary switch to the glow plugs because my relay (like all the others) is dead.

Is your relay dead, or the controller? If it is the (expensive) controller, all you need is a relatively low amperage momentary switch to supply a ground to the coil of the glow plug relay. I just added one to my FIL's 7260. About $3 at TSC, plus a bit of surplus 18g wire and two spade terminals. Soldered the new ground connection right to the existing relay terminal (it is the ORANGE wire).

In the process, I discovered that his controller is probably NOT bad as I expected, but the temperature switch IS bad. No problem, by just adding the manual switch, the auto controller is still functional as soon as he replaces the temp switch and plugs its wire back together. So now he has BOTH manual and auto function.
