I have a 7272 and sometimes have trouble getting it to turn over(diesel). I put a new battery in and cleaned all the connections. Sometimes when I turn the key it fires up on the first try. Other times it may take three or for turns till it turns over. Then sometimes it takes what seems like 20, lol. Everytime I turn the key I can hear a click in the vicinity of the starter but it just wont turn the engine over? Does this sound like a starter problem?

You say you hear a click. Do you mean like the solenoid working but not the starter turning? I have that problem with mine and have a new starter solenoid being shipped to me now.

What symptoms were you having? The click I was hearing I assumed was the solenoid working but the starter not engaging? How much did the solenoid cost ya? Is there a way to check if it is the solenoid or the starter?

thanx,

Jerry

I have a 7235 and mine does that periodically. I don't know why, but if I change the battery terminals it seems to fix it for about six months. I hope it is not your starter, but I imagine you would have to mortgage your house to buy one.

I would turn my key and the solenoid would give a loud click. Sometimes it would work fine. Most of the time it took anywhere from 3-20 times to get the starter to spin the motor over. I have waited over 9 months to fix this problem, no thanks to NAPA who carries this part. The part number is 66-8331. The solenoid was $39.39 + $7.00 shipping. I ordered it yesterday and it arrived today. My tractor is all fixed now and I'm happier than a pig in sh-t. Here's the post I put up about this company I found off of Ebay. As for what your problem is? I would have to listen to it to tell you if it is the same problem that I was having. Should you decide to pull the starter for repair. Make sure you grease the bearings, lube the shaft and gear reduction unit. This starter can be bought without going to a Cub Cadet dealer for around $150 if I recall. Give Jay a call to see if he carries it. The Cub Cadet starter number is MA-MM409412

Hi JimR, not sure how your starter and solenoid is designed, but I've had that same problem before on old cars. If I remember right, the solenoid is providing two functions, it engages the starter drive gear to mesh with the flywheel on the tractor, AND it also provides the electrical contact to spin the starter motor.

I think the electrical connection is the part that goes bad a lot, which is why you hear the click, but no spin. Some of the old Chevy and Ford solenoids used a "carriage bolt" like stud for the positive battery connection. If you crack open these old ones, the top of that bolt was used as the electrical connection and became corroded over time. The ones I looked at were always corroded on one side though.

So, I have on more than one occasion been able to loosen the nut that holds this bolt, turn it 180 degrees so the electrical connection now uses the other side of the bolt head, and tighten the nut back up, and fix the problem without even removing it from the car. Not sure if your starter and solenoid is designed the same way, but might be worth looking at. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

This sounds very similar to a post several months back on Cub starting. I didn't get the parts but I believe a relay was added and some minor wiring changes to correct it. Try a search and you should find something on this in this forum.

There was one other item that I forgot to mention. If your starter bendix gear is bad, it will not engage the ring gear on the starter unless it is lined up perfectly. This will also cause a loud clunk and the starter will not engage. You will be able to tell this when you pull the starter out. Look for grind marks on the side face of the flywheel ring gear.
