If I take apart this suction strainer won't all the trans fluid dump out? How can it be cleaned without draining first?

I believe you are correct sir. I will clean mine when I change fluid next month.

You will lose a lot. You could limit this greatly if you could get the tractor in a steep forward downhill orientation. If youre loader equipped you could accomplish this on mild incline or even flat, by backing the rears up on stable, levelled blocks, then lifting the front with loader and removing front wheels and letting the front down on the ground.

I'm just going to wait until the first trans oil change. I have 500 hours and haven't cleaned this strainer yet. All my hydraulics work fine. I've done the filters on schedule. Is there any reason that it must be cleaned now?

No, unless it has significant debris ... which you cant know til you look. The strainercatches all the bigger debris that may be in the trans when its put together. After that its kinda useless and presents an added suction restriction. I removed mine at 1st oil change.
