When I removed the front support from my 7600, I found 2 shims (like very thin washers) laying on the ground. They fell out without me taking note of their locations.

Can someone tell me where these shims are supposed to go? This is the big cast iron support that holds the axle and bolts to the engine with 6 bolts. The shims were apparently between the support and the engine block.

Can you see an outline of the shims on either of the mating faces? Chances are that's where they came from.

I think they might have came from the bottom 2 holes, but I am not sure. Are they installed in different locations at the factory? How would one tell where they should be?

It is hard to tell from the diagram, but those are actually the middle bolt holes. Messic's site shows a slightly different diagram, but the shim is indicated in the middle there as well. This is actually the point of confusion. I think they came from the bottom, but the diagrams show the middle.

I suppose I could put them in the bottom, then snug the top and bottom, then check the middle to see if I can get a feeler guage in between. I am reluctant though, because I don't yet understand the purpose of these shims.

I looked in the New Holland online parts catalog at both the row crop and the ag model, both manual and power steering and they only show 4 bolts holding the front axle support. I don't know what to tell you other than if you only have 2 shims they should go on the bottom, wouldn't make sense to put the shims in the middle with the top and bottom bolt fighting them.

Yes, the diagrams are definitely misleading. There are 3 bolts down each side for a total of 6 bolts. As you can see, New Holland sells different thickness shims. I would imagine that if I had a factory manual, it would give a specification and reason for these shims. I'd like to check the specs and make sure I'm putting it back together correctly, but locating a Ford factory manual is another problem that I'm having. Guessing seems to be a bad option, as the last thing I want to do is crack that big casting!

I just wanted to let everyone know that I confirmed with a feeler gauge that the shims go in the bottom holes. With the top and middle bolts tight, I could slide a .010 feeler in the bottom. Combining this with my educated guess that they must have fallen from the bottom, since I didn't notice them, and what might have been witness marks where they used to be - all information appears to be telling me the same thing.
