782 Hydro leaks oil

I would definitely replace the flexible discs on the driveshaft as I'm sure the original ones are gone- www.cubcadetstore.com has a set of 3 for about $30.00.

It was probably the other way around- the loose/missing engine mount bolts caused the driveshaft to become misaligned wearing out the coupling disks, the driveshaft oil seal, and the bearing race. If the bearing race is bad, it will likely start to leak from the new seal again very quickly. But, if its borderline, getting the engine down tight and having new disks that keep the driveshaft running on center you might be OK. The only issue I had with the hydro on my 682 was getting the "creeps" out of it, I was lucky I replaced the engine to notice the bolts were loose, and then when someone told me what the driveshaft could do if it broke loose at the rear coupling disk, I replaced those.

Now you just gotta ask someone in the family to get you that new Honda engine for Christmas! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Fordlords,

What did you do to get the "creeps" out of your 682 hydro. Is it just a matter of adjusting the center point on the linkage or is there more to it than that.

The answer to this one has got me into trouble with some old timers, but I more or less followed the service manual procedure short of tapping the linkage with a punch once loose or propping the tractor up on stands. I have tools precise enough to move the linkage in small increments by hand once its loose.

All it comes down to is you have to fiddle around with the linkage where the bracket bolts to the hydro and then adjust in or out the length of the arm/rod that goes to the linkage. If nothing is severely worn out, you'll be able to get rid of the neutral creeping with about 20-30 minutes of tightening-loosening- shortening- lengthening the adjustable rod to the link. You want the lever to hold neutral with it in that dash position, so it is more a matter of getting a precise position of the bracket on the hydro. It is rare that anyone gets it perfect with the old Sunstrands, but not so rare to get it working pretty darned good and being able to get it to stay put in neutral. Always fiddle with the hydro warmed up, as it tends to creep the most at operating temperature.

The parts to fixed my driveshaft arrived yesterday. I saved a trip to my dealer by buying them through partstree http://www.partstree.net/parts.asp They arrived in five days. The prices were reasonable. I will use them again. I got the 782 back together and did some mowing. Getting the shake out of the driveshaft makes everything feel smoother. The steering still feels a little loose. I may have another go at it. So for no leaks from the hydro so I'm happy.

Yes, there is deffinately a big difference in the sound of the 782 as compared to the 2544. The 782 sounds like a tractor with a slight sound coming from the mower. By comparison the 2544 sounds like the motor is idling and the blades are roaring. The 2544 cuts better, but I prefer the sound of the 782.

Thanks for all your help and advice.
