I just found a #7 backhoe that was installed on a 955 John Deere. I can get it but what will it cost me to convert it to a 790 JD? Does anyone have the parts I need they would be interested in selling? Thanks

That's the right hoe MAX, When I was deciding what hoe to buy for a 770 (same as the 790, just different engine) I contacted J.Deere about a subframe. I think the price was $1000.00 for the main frame and about $500.00 for another piece on the #7 backhoe. more than likely you already will get the hoe frame piece, so figure in the $1000-1300.00 range. (price of metal has gone up since then).
You might have a tough time getting someone to part with just the subframe.;)

Like Tim said, you'll need the subframe and all the tractor side brackets. No clue the cost but a dealer will know. I bought mine used from a dealer and it was setup from a different tractor. They already had all the parts to convert for my 790 so I don't know the individual cost. The install was a breeze. You'll need a power beyond kit for your tractor as well.

It's a fun little machine. I use mine as much as I can, but not nearly as much as my other implements. Install and removal is very easy, so much so that I leave my hoe on so it can stay in the garage and just pull it off for mowing etc.

One more question can the backhoe be moved in the back of a full sized pickup or do I need a trailer?

I won't say it's impossible but the subframe is designed to match the tractor-side brackets and I doubt the 955 brackets match the 790. You'd have to see them side-by-side to know what is different.

And yes, you can probably haul the 7 hoe in a truck bed, if you have a way to load/unload. Mine was forked onto my trailer and I swapped subframes then hooked it up to the tractor to get it off the trailer.

Those two tractors are very different, might take quite a bit of mod work, but with a welder much is possible, but might not be practical? (I'm game for just about anything to save a grand ;) )

Like Rob said, a full sized pick up is okay if you have a way to load and unload. That's how I transported a slightly heavier hoe.

If it's a good deal I recommend you get it, nobody has anything bad to say about their 790 with a #7 backhoe.

Ain't that the truth! I made a couple of different subframes for 955s and
that tractor has a convenient full frame to mount them to. The 790 is
a larger tractor with engine/tranny assembly used as a stressed member.
The 955 has a lower stance vs the 790 also.

As for pickup truck transport, I have done it that way, but with a
pallet and forklift. MUCH easier on a low trailer. Without a pallet or
without using a tractor mount with hydraulics, an unattached hoe is a very
cumbersome and unstable load.

The JD configurator lists code 1005, Bundle BM22373, Mountings, hydraulics, subframe, and rear hanger brackets for the 790, at $1205 list price. You would have to order through your salesman rather than parts department. The prerequisites are listed as follows:

Tractors Must be Equipped with a Front Loader. 3005, 790 and 770 Tractors Require BM18005 Power Beyond Kit and AM107212 ROPS Extension Kit. On 3005, 790 Tractors with 11.2-24, 4PR (R1) Tires, the Stabilizer will not Contact Ground for Adequate Stability.

I have a 756C subframe hoe sitting in my 1/2 ton pickup right now. Just came in from mid Florida with it. I also have a couple of shears in the truck with it, and one of the shears took 3 guys and a box of wheaties to load by hand. Don't know the size difference between the two hoes, but I put the bucket/outriggers in the front and let the frame sit on the tailgate.
