My new 790 has done everything I have needed it too. I have put about 20 hrs. on it and not broken anything yet. I cleaned up about 1 1/2 acres with the landscape rake. Then moved to the box blade. That is some piece of equipment. I am starting to think the people who developed these implements must have been really smart. Of course, I know they didn't develop overnight. I had to go back over with the rake, but, then I turned to the ole Gill pulverizer. It worked perfectly of course. After spreading a couple tall fescue seeds I went over with a piece of chain link fence and now have the makings of a new lawn. One things for sure, I should have rented the straw spreader. What a pain that was spreading straw. Thanks for everyones input on my new purchase. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You put down straw? Sheeeesh...I must have forgotten about late season ground frost in the Midwestern states. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Harley, spreading straw is a pain but those straw cannons can put it on so thick you end up going back over with a rake or by hand to thin it out, so maybe you did the right thing. Pete, the straw isn't really for frost but to hold moisture for seed germination and seedlings, to keep the seed from being washed away in heavy rain, and to keep birds from getting more than their fair share of the seed. We put down a lot of seed in October and November, covered it with straw (which also kept things from being too soupy), it was too late for it to germinate last fall but after a fairly serious winter and some huge rains, the seed held in place and the grass is greening up beautifully.

Sounds like you bought the right tractor for the job. Congratulations on your new work horse.

Is your the new style 790 without the vertical exhaust? Just curious.

I still have the model with the vertical stack. Manufacture date was in 2003. I am curious as to why you ask? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I work for a Deere dealer and I was amazed to see this new 790 come in with an underhood exhaust like the 4000 series. I don't know why Deere would spend money on a darn good model series when it is already perfect. I like vertical exhaust more than underhood since I could always smell the exhaust on my 4300 and less so on the 990.

Now I understand why you wanted to know. When I use my 790 I don't really smell much exhaust. Apparently, the stack gets it up high enough or maybe I am just short enough that it goes over my head. How do you like that 990?

If you are like me, you haven't yet experienced what your 790 will do. You are still getting used to it.

Enjoy it. I can't wait to pull mine out of the barn this weekend. It ain't warm enough or dry enough yet for me to begin the season where I live.

I love it and it's just like our 1991 970 which is also a great machine. I am glad to see you got the good style 790 and that you enjoy it. I can tell you this series is WAY better than the 4000 series. It shifts that much nicer.
