I need info on the JD 790, what are the advantages and disadvantages of this tractor vs the 4000 series?

Also JD vs Kubota? I am ready to make the plunge, but I need something to mow about 10 ac and would like a loader to work with around the barn. any suggestions.?

thanks

JD's 790, 990, 5105 and 5205 are the "Affordable Quality" line from JD. There is nothing "fluffy" about these tractors. The 4000 series offer a lot more options. The 790 has a standard sliding gear transmission, 8 forward 2 reverse speeds. A respectable 25 PTO HP. The loader is light duty, it suits the size of the tractor well. The major drawback for me is its fairly cramped work area and lack of a shuttle shift or HST transmission. My neighbors 790 works well for him. It handles his 6' brush mower great. For loader work, its more awkward to use when compared to the 4000 shuttles and HST transmissions. If thats not going to be a big part of your use and mowing type applications are, it is a tractor to consider. I'm not familar with the smaller Kubotas in this size so I'll let others comment about them. If it were me, I'd check into the 4000 series for prices as well. Rat...

fluffyone,

I would highly recommend you get out and test drive the 790 and the 4000 series tractors as they are very different. There are many 790 owners out here and it is a fine tractor that is less expensive than the 4000 due to "extras". The 790 does not have an available hydro transmission which may or may not be a big deal to you. If you aren't aware of the differences in those type of transmissions I would REALLY suggest test driving. When I was shopping tractors I tested a 790 out and liked it alot.

I would also suggest you go to your local Kubota dealer and test drive those as well. The JD's and Kubota's have different driver areas and one may suit you better than the other depending on you body size.

On another note I see you are from Alabama - Sorry to hear about the loss of your new football coach (he's from my neck of the woods).

I have a J.D. 790 now going on two years with a little over a 100 hours. I've plowed snow,
bush-hog small trees, finish-mow 72" rear deck, carry trees around with pellet forks.
I 'have no complaints but every now an then wish it had a HST trans.

Another tractor I'd consider is the New Holland TC 30. It's very similar to the J.D. 790
in size, hp and price but it's also available with a HST transmission. Understand
this tractor will also be offered under the Farmall name through Case/IH dealers...

Out of all the tractors I've looked at the J.D. 790 & N.H. TC 30 have the most bang for the buck...

I have a 790 and can second what everyone else has said about it. I love it and it works well for my wife and I. The other thing to check in your comparing is the tractor weight. The 790 is fairly light for it's hp, not normally a good thing in a tractor. The new 790s I've seen now have a 419 loader instead of the 70 loader that I've got. I suspect the 419 is a reconfigured 420. The masts looked a lot higher than mine. I've yet to see any specs.

Other than that, get out there and test the various models you like /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

thanks for the info, and yes I hate it about the coach at Alabama, but you would think that he would know to behave him self..if you dance you have to pay.

thanks for the info on the tractor and all the comments

As others have noted, the 790 is a solid tractor, and a decent deal for the money. One thing not mentioned so far is that it is limited in its FEL lift capacity (700 or 800 lbs?) & 3 pt hitch capacity (815 lbs). This is not a problem for a lot of uses, but if you need heavier capacities in a similar sized tractor, you'll need to look at the 4X00 or 4X10 series from JD, or the New Holland TC30 (economy model), or NH TC29/33 ("full featured" models).

Kubota has some nice offerings as well, but I'll let others with more knowledge of them comment (I haven't kept up with their latest offerings).

I can give you a comparison on my last two tractors. I previously had a Kuboya BX2200 and now own a Deere 790. I bought the Kubota to cut 6 acres of field. The rough nature of the field caused me to run the Bx slower than I would have liked and consequently took all day to cut.It had 5ft MMM.The deere has bigger tires and wheels and can sail over more bumps allowing me to cut same area in about 5~6 (5 ft RFM).
I can not fault either tractor they start and run perfectly. I bought the deere because no one could beat its price in its particular category. I thought the lack of hydrostat in the deere would be a big deal- it turned out to be a non issue. I made a mistake in not getting a larger RFM. The 5 ft cuts foot deep wet grass without a grunt. I personally like the ground clearance on the deere as I can cross ditches, and run in the woods easily.

I think the 790 has dry brakes as well. Depending on your application, you may be less than impressed with such prehistoric technology. May want to see if it has a hand crank too. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Anyway, I'd check out the NH TC30 as well. In my area, it can be had for 2k less and that's a BIG difference. Good luck with whatever you choose. AND on the Bama thing, It's roll'n baby! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If you describe a J. D. 790 as prehistoric technology, how would you describe a AC WD 45???

I see your "In search of the perfect yet inexpensive compact"...
Hang in there, Case/IH is bring back the Farmall brand. Understand the NH TC 30
will be available but with a red paint job wearing the Farmall badge.

I have no plains on trading my J.D.790 but on those occasions I would like a HST
the Farmall TC 30 might be just the trick. Can't help myself, I like red & green paint.
