I haven't found the procedure listed for this. Supposedly you can buy shims from the dealer and increase lift capacity of 3pt hitch from 815 lbs up to over 1200; can someone whos done this describe where the shims go and how to do it? Why didn't John Deere sell it with more capacity?

walker_mrf:

It's the "to shim or not to shim" a 790 question, do a search and you will get more info than you can shake a stick at.

I'm not going in all the detail you will find in past threads about this subject other than this.....they go under the seat and it's very easy to do.....do not shim without a gauge 2500psi is pushin' it, things may start to bend & break if you start to play "I'm a stud" with your tractor.

Then why would you look at buyin' a bigger tractor?

I own a 790 and love it, some of the best money I ever spent but if you need to be pickin' up 1200lbs I would move up the tractor food chain a little bit. If you like a basic tractor design like the 790, then peek at the 990 another basic tractor from JD.

but then again...what do I know /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

If you send me an e-mail at

I'll send you the procedure, or, as Whiskey mentioned, do a search for 790 and/or 419 on all forums. This thread goes back at least a few months, but it's there.

My personal belief is Deere kept the capacity of the 790/419 loader combo low to keep people into the 4210/4310 tractors. The other issue may be due to the weight of the 790...it is kind of a light weight.

I don't think you'd see the 3PH capacity raised to 1200 lbs, but you might get pretty close to a thousand pounds.

thanks, I wouldn't try it without help or a guage but did want to get the procedure while its being discussed. I love the tractor and the front weights helped the LX5 tremendously. Its more stable and steers better. I didn't want to pay for a 4310; the dealer had a 4wd closeout he wanted 14,900 for supposedly a 20k tractor; but the hp wasn't that much more than the 790 as I recall; but it had a lot more to carry weight wise. And a lot more to break down that I couldn't fix.

Walker, I have shimmed my 790, and slowly increased the amount wieght I will attempt to lift. I can't put a # on it for you. It has increased performance and as of today has caused no trouble. Good Luck!

Had very good luck installing the shim kit on my 790. It's part number AM875169. Others have tested it and it increases the pressure to 2500 psi.

I don't know the exact lift capacity, but I have a disk that weighs just under 1200 pounds and it handles it well now. It would not lift it before. That makes the tractor plenty light on the front end, even with the loader attached. I have had no problems so far, nor has anyone else I've heard of.

To install the shims slide the seat forward and open the cap on the far right. It's the taller cap and is under spring tension. Pay attention to how you put them in, if I remember correctly, they go right underneath the cap. What you're doing is setting the spring tighter on the relief valve so that the pressure is allowed to build higher before the oil by passes.

Good luck!

Carlos,

Thanks for the clear instructions. I installed three shims based on your directions tonight.

I went out to my field and believe I was picking up 1000 lb. stones without the normal need to dramatically increase engine RPM.

My question to you and others performing this enhancement is:

How many shims are you using and what effects are you noticing? The part when ordered from Deere comes with several shims.

I will try to post some digital photos tomorrow showing any improvements in front end loader lift capacity.

Here is a photo of a granite stone that I lifted without problem.
