JD 790
I plan to add some 3-point equipment to my list for gardening. I will be purchasing a disk, cultivator, plow, and maybe another item or two. I will probably go with KK equipment since Tractor Supply has it all readily available locally. I may purchased used if I can find something of interest. I think the 5' light duty disk will fit my needs....

What about a plow? They have 1 & 2 bottom in both 12" & 14". Anyone with a suggestion? First cut will be never plowed land so I want something this tractor can handle....

I would prefer a 2 bottom - If my tractor will handle it???? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

A lot of people just get a rototiller. here are advantages: less storage, less tool changes, able to cultivate closer to plants (if rows are spread far enuff), and with the size of a 790 probably quicker.

Disadvantages : higher initial cost $1000-2000

I have a one bottom for my 790 and use it in an already plowed garden. I really don't think the 790 will handle a 2 bottom, particularly in unplowed ground.

I agree with RDLN a tiller is probably the better way to go. I have a 50" for my 770 and works great in the neighbors garden (i don't plant /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif).

I agree with the others, skip the other equipment and go with the King Kutter 60" tiller (around $1100 area).
The KK II tillers work very well.

I have a 850 it can easily pull a 2 bottom plow BUT!!! there is no draft control on these smaller tractors. I have the 1 bottom you described and my garden looks like a battlefield when I am done the plow digs in deeper when the front wheels hit a bump and pops up when you go back down again, and it only gets worse when you try to compensate for it by using the hydraulic setting. I did pick up a 1 bottom trailer type plow at an auction last year and with a few adjustments it will work well.
I regularly use a 6' harrow but the old pull behind type. My cousin has the 3ph one and does not care for it because it needs to be lifted at the end of each pass. I suspect this is only a problem when you are disking large acreages like he does.
I plan to get the KK 60" tiller this spring I think this may be the way to go for my 1 acre garden. The rest of the acreage will have to be turned and disked.

What or who's drill is best suited for a JD 790? I'd like to plant 6 ac of oats with a 790. Thanks!

The 790 might not pull an agricultural grain drill, maybe Brillions 4 or 5' seeder.

But oats would broadcast well.

I have a 2 bottom for my old Farmall, which doesn't have draft control either. It works pretty well, but you need to be quick with the lift lever. If it hadn't come with the tractor, I probably wouldn't have gotten one.
Plowing is fun, but not really necessary. You will eventually compact the soil, creating a "plowpan". Once you have initially broken the sod, you can get by with just the disk harrow.
My opinion is to forego the plow and get the tiller.
How big of a garden are you putting in? The 790 may not have enough clearance for the cultivator either. If your garden isn't too big, you may just want to get a walk behind tiller and use it to cultivate.
