790 Tie Rod

Hey guys, I have a small problem on my 790. I work around rocks and a lot of brush and stumps. About a month ago, I latched a hold of a small stump with the tie rod and bent it just about in a "U" shape. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Ok, I limp it back to the barn and very carefully, back it on the trailer. I take it to my Deere dealer, who orders and installs a new tie rod. Great! Problem fixed. Well, untill last week, I caught a tree trunk sticking out of a brush pile while dumping a load of brush onit.. Guess where it hit?? You guessed it, right on the new tie bar. Bent it again! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif You guys have any suggestions on a guard that can be purchased or made and placed in front of the tie rod so this doesn't keep happening? I already have replaced 3 grilles and 2 head lights on this machine by it getting smacked in the front end by stray tree branches when using the FEL! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Smilingreen, you are one tough fella' on your poor 790!! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Since you are using your FEL to do the work, why don't you use the FEL as your front end guard!! I suggest keeping the FEL close to the ground while driving forward and then raising it just prior to dumping the load.

I do not think that you can equip the tractor with any front-end protection due to the FEL attachment.

I agree with Terry. I do a lot of lot clearing with my 790 and I to have hit the grill and lights but I was able to strighten them out. I have bent the drag link many times I also strighten it out useing a ratchet strap works great. the only way is to keep your bucket close to the ground and use it as a bumper.

How do you like your #7 Hoe for your 790? Does it work well? How long does it take to hook up and remove?

On my property, we have had 4 dozers, 4 track hoes and 4 back hoes out here clearing some of the wooded land. Being that it had been a very wet winter here, there is quite a bit of deep MUD on the logging roads they have created in the woods. Being that all of the equipment operators are students from a heavy equipment training school, they sometimes "forget" to pull out all of the stumps, or a stump hole was covered with loose mud, but not walked in or compacted. When I drive down the logging road, because of the "roughness" of the road and cleared areas, I need to keep my bucket up a little. Otherwise, it would be constantly hitting the ground. On smoother gound, I always run the bucket about 6" to 8" off the ground. This is the reason I keep bending the tie rod. I thought maybe there might be a way to place a guard in front of it. I would rather smack a guard with a stump or trunk than with the tie rod.

I've bent my tie rod twice. Here is how to fix it: Hook a chain onto the bent place (probably in the middle) and hook the other end onto a tree. Put it in low range and back up. It will straighten out perfectly. That tie rod is kind of a bad design on JD's part.
