A friend at work has a 790. Last years model. He just related a story about this weekend.

He said that he was working on a enbankment, and had the loader high. The tractor started to go over. He said that the tractor dumped the load and shut down by itself. When the load went it righted itself. He said that his hand wasnt on the loader control.

Is there a tilt protect feature on the 790?

I hope the owner of the 790 figures out what went wrong before he is a 'goner'. Not sure what it takes to keep tractor people from being on an embankment and raising a loader high in the air.
I suspect he dumped it himself, but at a minimum he should have quickly dropped the loader down to take its counter load off the rear end.
Sounds like he is a lucky survivor. He escaped the Darwin award, it appears. I don't think he is re-living that story correctly. But that is just my opinion. If there is a built-in feature, its been a well kept secret, IMO.

I would hink the loader dumped from his leg hitting it, that would be the dump position. No safety that I am aware of.Glad he is ok.

Yeah, I'll bet his leg hit the loader control as all his muscles tensed up. I've hit it myself accidentally. Good to hear all worked out for him. Assume he had to change his pants?

Good morning

I believe that there is a tilt protect feature on the 790 and all tractors. That feature is in the driver's seat.

I just hope that your friend does not believe that the tractor will save him from his errors. Only he can do that.

Do I assume correctly the tractor was going over forward (rear end coming up)?

If so, it sounds like he slid forward on the seat. In doing so, he probably snagged the loader control. As both go forward, the bucket lowers but as he slid off the seat, the operator presence safety switch under the seat realized not enough operator weight and shut down.

Tractor was facing the bank on more or less flat ground, loader was up on the bank filling in depressions on the bank. The front left tire sunk in a soft spot and the tilt was sideways.

The configuration of his machine was no different than dumping a bucket full from almost full height.

My guess was that he hit the stick also because I had never heard of anything like that either and couldnt see a tilt saftey switch that wouldnt be anything but a hazard. I had never heard of a kill switch like that when I was looking at 790's. Probably dumped the clutch which caused the load to fall out fast and killed the motor.

I agree with you guys, he is a lucky guy, well not that lucky. He took the MMM of the 790 later that day and broke his middle finger in 3 places /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Thanks for posting, as we can all learn from the experience.
And the mention of getting out of the seat and hitting the 'dump' feature may have been the logical explanation for the shut-down and dumping the load. At least, he is safe (and can now tend to his broken finger - ouch!!).

I can't tell you how many folks drive around with the loader up sometimes even with a load in it. It drives me nuts as it is absoulutely an accident waiting to happen. The 790 has a very small loader but still, it can go up high enough to easily upset the tractor. Even an empty loader on a hill can take that few hundred pounds of raised loader and multiply the weight by the changing moment. The real bummer too is with the loader raised, you have no chance of getting it safely to the ground if you start to upset the tractor. He was lucky and I hope learned a lesson.
