Hi everyone!
Sorry if this is a similar post.
I have 18 acres in the OKC, OK area, ~70% wooded w/ scrub oak, summac, and cedar. The remaining 30% is/was field grass & weeds, and is where my new home is. It is slightly hilly. I like living outside the city, but I was not "raised a country boy", so I've got a lot to learn.
I had planned on purchasing a DR Field & Brush mower w/ lawn deck attachment, but several folks that I've mentioned it to say that with what I have acreage wise, the fact I would "get beat up", versatility (or lack thereof) and for safety reasons, the DR would not be in my best interest. They recommend a compact tractor or at least a good lawn/garden tractor. Also, I was not impressed when I asked DR "what happens if I hit a rock"-- ie it's ruined vs a sheer pin or something.
So, heading my friends advice, I ended up picking up some propaganda sheets from the JD dealer near where I work. The JD dealer suggested 790, 4115, and possibly 4310. Since I don't drive a standard car, we thought it would be better to stick with automatic (hydro); I've since learned that a tractor stick is different from an auto's. I seem to be gravitating to the 4115, but I'd loose the option for a back-hoe, even though it is unlikely that I'd ever get one, as well as tilt steering wheel. The dealer had suggested a pull behind grooming deck vs mid-mount, but my friends have said to get the mid-mount because of manuverability. The dealer sells his compacts hydrolics-ready for FEL.
I then checked out a dealer closer to home, but they only sell the JD lawn/garden tractors and sell Cub Cadet compact. That person had suggested CC 7200. Price is better and I can get a back hoe if so desired, but I'm not as familiar with the name. Also, I noted that it has indirect injection, dry brakes, and lacks some safety features. Their (clubcadet)web site is not as informative as JDs, and I'm not sure about the PTO, ie when does it turn.
My driveway is about 300' long and is gravel, so I can see myself using a box blade, in addition to 4' RC, mower, and possible FEL. Whatever I get, I think I should get the R-4 Industrial tires vs Ag or Turf; it seems to be a better compromise. Would any of these models be suitable for pushing over the afformentioned oak/summac, or would I still need to hire out a dozer?
I'd probably stick with a new tractor for the warranty plus the fact that I'm not necessarily mechnically inclined and can nurse an older tractor. By day I write software <G>.
Any comments, suggestions? Thanks in advance! The only brand name I'm really familiar with is JD.
PS: I think I've figured out FEL, MMM, and RC, but be easy on other acronyms <G>.
