Hi everyone!

Sorry if this is a similar post.

I have 18 acres in the OKC, OK area, ~70% wooded w/ scrub oak, summac, and cedar. The remaining 30% is/was field grass & weeds, and is where my new home is. It is slightly hilly. I like living outside the city, but I was not "raised a country boy", so I've got a lot to learn.

I had planned on purchasing a DR Field & Brush mower w/ lawn deck attachment, but several folks that I've mentioned it to say that with what I have acreage wise, the fact I would "get beat up", versatility (or lack thereof) and for safety reasons, the DR would not be in my best interest. They recommend a compact tractor or at least a good lawn/garden tractor. Also, I was not impressed when I asked DR "what happens if I hit a rock"-- ie it's ruined vs a sheer pin or something.

So, heading my friends advice, I ended up picking up some propaganda sheets from the JD dealer near where I work. The JD dealer suggested 790, 4115, and possibly 4310. Since I don't drive a standard car, we thought it would be better to stick with automatic (hydro); I've since learned that a tractor stick is different from an auto's. I seem to be gravitating to the 4115, but I'd loose the option for a back-hoe, even though it is unlikely that I'd ever get one, as well as tilt steering wheel. The dealer had suggested a pull behind grooming deck vs mid-mount, but my friends have said to get the mid-mount because of manuverability. The dealer sells his compacts hydrolics-ready for FEL.

I then checked out a dealer closer to home, but they only sell the JD lawn/garden tractors and sell Cub Cadet compact. That person had suggested CC 7200. Price is better and I can get a back hoe if so desired, but I'm not as familiar with the name. Also, I noted that it has indirect injection, dry brakes, and lacks some safety features. Their (clubcadet)web site is not as informative as JDs, and I'm not sure about the PTO, ie when does it turn.

My driveway is about 300' long and is gravel, so I can see myself using a box blade, in addition to 4' RC, mower, and possible FEL. Whatever I get, I think I should get the R-4 Industrial tires vs Ag or Turf; it seems to be a better compromise. Would any of these models be suitable for pushing over the afformentioned oak/summac, or would I still need to hire out a dozer?

I'd probably stick with a new tractor for the warranty plus the fact that I'm not necessarily mechnically inclined and can nurse an older tractor. By day I write software <G>.

Any comments, suggestions? Thanks in advance! The only brand name I'm really familiar with is JD.

PS: I think I've figured out FEL, MMM, and RC, but be easy on other acronyms <G>.

<font color="green">Anyone who writes software should find acronyms no problem. I work in the information technology area and find more alphabet soup to deal with on the job than in this forum.

I am sure you will find lots of good advice from the many fine folks that participate in TBN discussions. (Sorry I just couldn't resist throwing in another acronym.)

The search feature at this web site can help you to find what others have already offered in the way of advice regarding some of your specific needs and the models in which you are interested.

Hi Mike!

I originally came across the discussion group of this web site with a yahoo search. After I posted my message I saw mention of Muhammad's book. Going to "home" I found how to order and download it. Now I've got plenty of reading to do /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif! Thanks for pointing out the search feature.

Maybe someday I'll be able to adjust some DTED with my FEL as I guide my CUT with GPS. NIMA will then have to update their CADRGs /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif!

(DTED- Digital Terrain Elevation Data; NIMA-- National Imagery and Mapping Agency, CADRG-- Compressed Arc Digitized Raster Graphics. BTW, I'm a programmer with the FAA, working on IAPA-- Instrument Approach Procedure Automation). Sorry, I just had to do it!!!

Glenn, I would suggest the 4310, 430 loader, & mid mounted 72" mower. I have the same combination on a 4410 and it works great. You will love the ehydro and the larger tractor will give you more flexibility with different jobs and larger implements, not to mention a VERY popular size and model for resale value. The 790 is also a VERY good tractor as well if you are not interested in all the bells and whistles. Good luck!

Chief,

Thanks a lot for your input. Based on some of the stuff I have read here, the eHydro is looking better and better.

Congratulations on your up-coming retirement /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif! I hope you truly enjoy it.

Hi all,

I've taken the plunge! After talking over coffee with a "real farmer" who has a 4210, at least 3 "big" JD tractors, 2 JD combines, and other JD stuff, and driving his 4210 a little bit, I headed out to the dealer that he has used for the past 15-20 years.

I probably got more than what I need right away, but this way it's on the financing.

4310 eHydro, 4WD, R4 tires, DSCV
430 FEL
LX5 RC
3pt hitch grooming mower
box blade
rear blade
5' tiller

I was going to get the MMM, but I saw how close to the ground it was even when raised, and I didn't relish the thought of putting it on and taking it off. Dealer said I didn't need the mid-PTO and said that I probably wouldn't use the cruise control upgrade. Total cost was $25100 excluding rear blade-- was an afterthought, but should be about the same price as the box blade. I'm holding off on the iMatch hitch to see how I do with the basic 3 pt. The equipment should be ready in about 10 - 14 days.

Thanks for all the messages in this and other threads, and thanks for the Compact Tractor Buying and Basics book!
