Went to crank my 790 last week, after 2 months of sitting. Well it just clicked and would not even turn over. Carried the battery to auto zone they said i needed new battery, brought it home, cranked right up ran it for 30 minutes, tried cranking it this past saturday, would turn over but with not enough power to start had to jump it off. ANy suggestions on what could be draining the new battery?? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

My OE yuasa battery lasted 8 years/900 hrs, I would try cleaning connections and mounting surface ground to this regulator or selenoid forgot what they call it.

I think you have a charging problem. simple check is to get tractor started and run headlights/flashers and see if they dim after awhile otherwise a multimeter is required to check current to battery.

Check ground connection on engine block. There have been several post on TBN that this fixed battery problems.

In addition to what the others are suggesting, check your battery cables at the battery end. The 790s are notorious for battery terminal corrosion. I had one literally fall off before I replaced my battery. New cable end and it's been fine since /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My neighbors 790 had the bad battery corrosion issue. It ate through the positive battery clamp so he bought a cheap clamp on type to replace the one that corroded. He tossed the battery as it was eating up the front end of the tractor. He put in a NAPA battery and while the corrosion slowed down, he still gets piles of the white fuzz on the positive termianl even with anti corrode gaskets. Make sure all that is clean, check it often. Verify that you are not loosing current while the tractor sits idle. You can test this with a amp meter. With everything off, disconnet one lead from the battery. Place the amp meter in line and see if you get a reading. It should not have any current flowing. There seems to be something about some JD's and batteries.

The only design flaw I know of in the 790 is the battery cables and their corrosion issue. I had the same problem. My Deere dealer came out and replaced the thin japanese cables with thick american cable and put in a bigger battery. That was two years ago -- no issues since.

Best of luck,

Buck

I let my 790 sit for long periods in the winter months (bummer), but I've found the following simple practices to work really well:

<ul type="square">
[*]Keep the Battery on a trickle charger
[*]Clean the batery terminals and connectors till they shine bright
[*]When it's really cold, I sometimes jump start the tractor from my running car battery. The extra AMPS really help
