Wife decided on 6, 4 foot led's for the 48 foot isle in our barn. We got them from Orion west lighting and she is very happy with them. They were pricey, but hopefully we will saying electric bills for years to come. Here is a pick, still a work in progress.
Good luck in your search

I've got plain vanilla 4' flourescents in my barn/garage. About 2 years ago we replaced ~80 400W metal halide lights with 4' T5HO 6 tube units in my business - they are high bay type lights (20' clear) and the lighting is great. More light, more even coverage. No complaints so far. The old MH were too high maintenance and energy hogs. T5's are available from 4w up to 80w. We installed 54W tubes. I also have a couple of 4' LED workbench lights - they are pricy, but you can't beat 'em for light output/watt.

Could you define "pricey" in REAL terms, such as dollars/1000 lumen?

In several recent threads we've seen 4 foot LED lights going for as little as $25 each.

I bought 5 Commercial-Electric-4-ft-LED-White-Shop-Light from HD on sale for $25@ with an output of 3200 lumens, they are back to $50@.

Costco had a deal on 4' LED $32 for 3700 lumens led-shop-lights they are regularly $40, I only bought 2.

I don't consider either of those "pricey". But I was looking at ebay and saw a LOT of people selling the Cosco lights for $60.

As far as 8' LED's I have not found any inexpensive 8' fixtures.

I got 5 Utilitech (sold by Lowes) 4ft LED Shop lights in my garage. I love them. Got two end to end over each bay of my garage making an 8ft shop light. And one crosswise overtop of my work bench. I wanted to buy more and install them into my basement of the house but of course within the week of buying these and installing them Lowes was out of stock and said they were a manufacture discontinued item. Went online and read the reviews of the same ones I had and they were 5 out of 5 star reviewed. Not sure why a company discontinued something everyone was raving about how great it was...

The Plant Manager brought a single, Feit brand, 4' LED home (model 73993) from Costco for "under $40". I was in the middle of making a mounting/support frame for our basement sump pump when she suggested that I try it out. Brought it out to the garage/shop with the existing 4 & 8 foot & pigtail fluorescents already burning. Plugged in the LED unit and ... oh, boy ... that thing is bright! Started looking for a place to hang it and realized that that was going to be a project in its' own right, so I unplugged it and finished my work, just in time to wash up & go to bed. I told her to get some more, next time she's at Costco.

Only improvement I can think of is to swap LED's rocker switches with the pull string switches from the existing 4 & 8 foot fluorescents that get replaced.

My 24x42 ft shop (12 ft walls) was built 10 years ago. I used 4-ft dual fluorescent fixtures (Lithonia from Home Depot) initially. Got tired of replacing the ballasts every few years so I went to the screw-in compact fluorescent flood lights (outdoor type) as each of the tubular units crapped out. A lot easier to change those screw in bulbs with the built in ballasts.

Good luck
