80s ford 3910 diesel dies

I was using mine then it started surging then died so I checked water separator and it was full replaced bled finally got it started again but now it did the same thing again so I drained it filled it back up ran for about 15 minutes and died I can start with starting fluid but not on its own then it dies again any suggestions mine is a 3910 from the 80s with a front end loader when I do get it started it will run on diesel then surges if I play with the throttle I can make it run but if I leave it Idling it will surge and die

I'd drain every drop of Diesel from the fuel tank, and replace with fresh..

Have you check the fuel cutoff to make sure it isn't moving when you hit the throttle? Have you changed the filter? Is there any sediment coming out of the water separator? Really the only thing that engine needs to run is fuel and air, no electronic control on it at all. I don't think these tractor have a screen inside the tank but there could be something partially clogging inside the tank, I'm not sure what woudl happen if teh fuel return line were clogged but check that too.

Beyond any of this I would venture to say you have an injector pump issue.

When u changed the filters did u put the TOP oring UP IN THE FILTER HEAD OR "ON" the filter..
U HAVE TO PUT THE ORING "UP IN" the filter head NOT "ON" the filter.. it chokes off the fuel..
I hope that helps get u going..
PLUS>> U HAVE TO DRAIN THE TANK.!! The OUTLET DOES HAVE a filter screen on it.. if THATS clogged it wont deliver enough fuel.
