80w90 as hydro fluid???

This question is a little off the Yanmar subject, but I thought I'd ask seeing as how there is a lot of experience here. My brother has a Bolens, diesel, 4wd, with Iseki power. An underhood sticker says the hydraulic system uses 80w90 rather than hydro fluid. His FEL works rather slow and he wondered about this fluid. Gear dope is not really meant to be pumped. Has anyone heard of this? Thanks

Actually, my little Mitsubishi S370 manual says the same thing, but I believe something was lost in the translation. I changed my hydraluic oil and it was about the consistancy of light weight motor oil when I took it out. I followed the book and replaced it with gear oil & had the same problem you are experiencing. I started reading the forum and decided to try the regular tractor hydraulic oil & it has worked great ever since with no problems. you might check the fuel & lubricants forum on this site.

Universal hydraulic/transmission fluid, = to or better than JD303 is the correct fluid.

A long long time ago, you some tractor manufactures specified a gl-1 90wt mineral oil for use in some of the common sump hyd / rear ends.. but that was like 1939-1952. Most nowadays specify a universal transdraulic fluid.. For instance, my NH1920 used the universal fluid in the front final drive, rear final drive, power steering, and hyd's.

If fo some reason he has an oddball that really wants the 90 wt oil, go to a TSC or other farm store, and look for oil under the traveler brand, it will specify for Ford tractors 39-52.. and it will be a 90wt mineral oil.. not an 80/90 ep oil.. big difference. Occasionalyy a sams or wallmart will carry the gl-1 90wt mineral oil depending on what part of the country you live in.

For what it's worth.. I ran jd303 in my ym1700...
