I'm a recent owner of this tractor and anything with a diesel engine. I did manage to run out of fuel. Now that I've bled the system and got the engine running, it's gone from easy start smooth running, to, hard to start without assist, access smoking and rough running especially at higher rpm.

I'm hoping someone out there has a possible solution?

I,ve been searching for a Perkins 1981, 4-236 diesel service/ repair manual. Anyone who knows of a source I sure would appreciate your help ?

Welcome to the forum - those bidirectional 150's are a neat special purpose machine (wehad one from new)- from the symptoms described you have air in the fuel lines (common when diesel engines are allowed to run dry).

Like most diesels the Perkins 4.236 must be "bleed" thoroughly of air & primed once you run out of fuel, from memory (& looking at another of ours on a pump set) witht engine/ignition off :-
1. The fuel transfer pump should have manual pump thumb type lever to pressurise/move diesel into the fuel system .
2. If this pump lever feels a little soft/unpressurised like it's not moving fuel you may need to sliightly crank the engine a touch with the ignition without starting the tractor (this spins the camshaft to a better positon for the manual priming lever "strokes ")
3. Now trace the fuel pressure line from the transfer pump to the fuel filter housing (there should be one usually two filters in a clear bowls). If the filters are dirty from draining dirty fuel from the tank replace them.
4. Next there will be some sort of bleeder (usually a screw) on top of the fuel filter housing open the bleeder & pump fuel (via the manual lever) until fuel is flowing freely without any air through this bleeder once this happens close this bleeder
5.Now move to the fuel injection pump, there should be another bleeder in the side crack it open about 2 maybe 3 turns with a 5/16" ring spanner/socket, turn your ignition on to "power" the soleniod for the injection pump up & close the bleeder once air is removed & diesel is free flowing.
6. Move to the injectors, loosen the the 2 furthest lines at the injector, have someone spin the engine over (withour starting) until fuel is popping these injectors then tighen these up & repeat this step for the other 2 injectors

Now you should be good to go ....It may sound complicated but it's fairly easy & essential skill to have for diesel engines.
Good luck & please post a few photo's of your 150 !!!

I know this is an old thread but I have an 81 Series 2 and I am having trouble starting it. I believe the problem is in the safety circuit for either the platform rotation or the steering wheel position. Can anyone tell me how you know when the steering wheel is in the proper position other than that the engine turns over? My grandkids like to play in it and I am sure the steering wheel has been turned many times.
