Problem:
I bought an old ('84 I think but no serial number found to confirm and 2200 hrs) B7100 this past winter and used it to clear snow. The front axle left is leaking past the rubber ring and felt washer. This model has the globe type hub known for leaking. It's normlly a slow leak went in use or sitting but I jacked up the front to change from ags to turf and within a day all of the gear oil leaked out (big puddle). Kubota National service manual states that
the rubber and felt rings are just dust seals and that "If there is oil leaking past these rings, the problem lies elsewhere. Check the seals on the outboards gear case of the seal in the inboards end of the axle housing." This repair would be beyond what I would want to tackle as I look at the pictures in the repair manual.
The previous owner said he had a mechanic not Kubota service repair the left side front axle when the bearings siezed up (lack of gear oil).
The tractor came with a FEL, new ags, bought a used 3 pt. finish mower and ROPS turfs and r4s. Paid under 3k for the whole set-up. I am concerned if I use this tractor for mowing two acres a week I will kill the front drive. Also have garden tractor for lawn mowing that wife would like me to get rid of. "You can't have too many tractors"
Solutions and need for advice:
I am considering having Chappell tractor in Milford, NH rebuild the front drive axle ($140 to get it there and $70/hr labor plus parts). I'm guessing $500-$700.
or
I could just keep pumping in gear oil and use it only for FEL applications and use the garden tractor for mowing.
or
I could just keep pumping in gear oil and use it like a tractor.
Anyone have experience with this problem?
