Yesterday I went to borrow an auger from my neighbor. The tractor was running fine, the neighbor even mentioned how good it sounded, etc. I turned the tractor off, back on, then off while hooking the auger up. Next time I tried to start, it was silent. No cranking at all. Just a slight sound from underneath the hood. We tried jumping from his tractor. Nothing.
I removed the Walmart battery, brought it home and tested it - showed 12.2 on the voltage. I charged it for a while - put it back on the tractor - still wouldn't even crank. The battery was over 3 years old, so I removed it again - took it to Walmart to test it. They said the battery was okay, but needed charging. The read out showed 206 out of 540 cca? I charged it up to 12.6, re-installed with still no results.
I suspected the starter, so I removed that (had to take the oil filter off to get the starter to slide out), brought it home, hooked it onto my charger and it turned as it should. I'm going to reinstall the starter, as well as the charged battery, and hope for the best. But if it still doesn't crank, I don't know what to do next.
The tractor had been converted over to 12 volt by a previous owner, who indicated that the battery needed charging frequently in order to start the tractor. I have owned it for 2 years and have to charge it occasionally after several hours of use. Otherwise, no problems with this old tractor except slight leaking of rear end.
I could use some advice. I'm not a mechanic, but I am learning by trial and error. Thanks.
