moship and Barry 1, you guys nailed it! The owner of the JD 850 just e-mailed me that the crank case breather tube was indeed clogged up. After cleaning it out and adding oil, he ran it for 30 minutes-no further oil leakage-all seems well. THANKS AGAIN.
