When I set the cruise control on my 855 it looses a lot of ground speed. Is there an adjustment to get it to operate in cruise at or near the same speed as when you are depressing the go pedal?

That is what mine has always done. I never use it. It is a very crude mechanical system. One of the things I like about my tractor is it is all basic mechanical systems, but that is too basic.

A cruise control that is essentially a pedal lock doesn't work well enough to interest me. The new cruise controls with active engine and ground speed monitoring work very well. The cruise on my x749 mower simply locks the pedal down and is crude, I rarely use it. The 4520 with upgraded cruise and load match works very well. It holds the speed I set in 1/10 mph settings allowing me to bump it up or down from 2.2 to 2.3 mph and so on. Great for tilling and other work such as broadcast seeding. These new updated cruise controls will vary the engine speed to maintain the speed you choose. But just as an auto cruise can shut off if you overload the drivetrain it will turn off occasionally and need to be reset.

I never used it much till recently. Been skidding logs a fair distance and my knee starts hurting holding down the go pedal that long. I looked up the adjustments in the service manual and will try those when I get time to see if it improves it any. I was just being lazy and thought I'd ask here to see if anyone ever got one to work so it didn't drop off that much. I will eventually want to use it to disc and mow a large area so I would like to get it working better.

About to enter a new era in my stump and tree cleanup anyways. Bought a New Holland 575E backhoe/loader to start in on the heavy stuff with.:)

My 4300 is a magnet that is energized with a switch, that holds the forward pedal in position.

The detail of the 855 appears there is a cable set on a ratchet assembly to hold the position. That is similar, if true, to the 400 series lawn tractors that I have. Just have to set cruise at the nearest notch and ride, until the pedal is touched forward or the brake engaged.
Being clean and free to move seems to be the basic need there.

On some of these tractors my lawn tractor for instance I find to set the cruise I have to set the speed a little faster than I want. This makes up for the slowing down when it actually engages at the lower speed. I suspect it is simply slack in the linkages.

When they slow down like you are talking, I would give the cruise lever a little finger pressure and a little more pedal at the same time until I herd it click and it would be set where i wanted it.

Better description than my solution but hopefully the same outcome.
