Hello Everyone,
I just bought a 855 with a backhoe attachment and the PTO & 3-point are not working. Is there a lock-out or ??????? to disable them ?

I am a newbie so I appreciate all input & info......

Welcome to TBN:D

When you removed the backhoe (I assume you did because you want to use the 3PH) did you connect the two hose together on the tractor?

Since the machine has a backhoe it is completely possible the PTO hasn't seen much use. I know the PTO can be a little temperamental on my 755 if don't exercise the linkages on a regular basis. Check and make sure everything is free moving to start with. If everything appears to be in order you can check this posting I made just after I bought mine, might give you some more ideas on where to check:

As for the 3 pt. If the hose has been reconnected and it still doesn't work there is a valve under the seat that controls how fast the 3 pt. falls. I was messing around with mine one day and closed it a little too much, the 3 pt. would go up, but not down. After a little head scratching I remembered I closed the valve a little bit to keep the mower from crashing down and it turns out I closed it just a little too much.

Good luck,

Jason

Thanks Guys,

The hoe is still on the tractor. In fact, I don't have the links etc., just the short arms that are powered (supposed to be powered). I hope to have time this weekend to play with it a little more. (If and a big IF, I don't have to work all weekend)

I suspect at least the PTO problem is in the seat switching. The seat has been modified so that it swivels around for hoe operation and I found a switch that is just laying there, wires intact, but not mounted to anything.

Any ideas as to where I can find some links, arms, etc. for the 3 point? I don't even know what all that I will need. I am a newbie for sure, but fairly mechanically inclined. I have a little fabrication and machining capabilities available if any of these things need to be made.

All help appreciated..........

Jack

Your PTO is electrically actuated and the seat interlock switch often causes
problems with it. If in original condition, the switch is designed to be
manually pulled up when you are off the seat and want to use the PTO.
These switches eventually fail and get bypassed with a jumper.

I agree with JASON on the 3-pt position control.

Finally, your 3-pt arms, links, and stay chains are fairly small for a Category
One hitch. You can fabricate your own or buy some of the generic hitch
parts you see on Ebay (about $200). JD OEM parts will be much higher $.

One of the lower arms on my 3 pt. is pretty beat so I priced out a new arm through Deere, I think it was over $300 for 1. I checked out a Yanmar dealer (since our tractors are Yanmar's under all the green paint) and they have a complete kit for a lot less money:

THREE POINT KIT - FREE SHIPPING! _: Yanmar Tractor Parts

They offer two different kits, I think one has 23" arms and the other has 27" arms. I haven't measured my up, but I think 27" would work best on mine.

Thanks, I like saving money as much as making money. (bout the same thing except only better due to tax savings)

changing the subject a bit....

The shop manual keeps stressing John Deere fluids, eng. oil, coolant, & hydraulic oil.... Is there really any difference????? Wouldn't any premium brand be about the same as long as you stayed with the proper viscosity etc.????? Particularly the hyd oil. The very first thing that I want to do is to change all fluids. They don't look bad now, just want to start fresh so I know what is in there.....

Any problems in mixing brands of hyd oil ????

Thanks Again

The one thing I refuse to go cheap on is the oil, especially the hydraulic oil. The stuff that Deere sells is likely some generic off the shelf stuff you could by else where for less, but if there is some special additive in there that the transmission needs I'm not willing to find out. Penny smart, pound foolish if you go with some other brand if you ask me.

Don't forget to pull the strainer out of the bottom of the transmission and clear out all the metal shaving and chips from the sump.
