85w140, TSC, NAPA, Walmart Diff?

Been looking around for gear lube for my rotary cutters. TSC has Travelers 5gal for $58, NAPA has Valvoline 5gal for $78, and Walmart has off brand for $8.68 per ga ($43.40 5gal). All are GL5 rated which is what JD dealer told me to run in my 1518 batwing mower.

Another one of those, is it worth it questions. How much oil does one of those 140-150 hp gear boxes hold anyway? It really is not that much difference in price unless you change it every year, and maybe I should?

Thoughts, ideas? I see other threads on this issue relating to Walmart brand tractor fluids, but not really specific to 85w140. Help please.

I have tha manual covering the 1517, 1518, and 2018..My 1517 has 4 gear boxes.. the 3 blade boxes, and the 1 3-head supply box.

There are 2 box manufacturers.. comer and iberica

comer 2qt splitter box, other 3 2.9qt each

iberica 2 qt splitter, other 3 2.3qt each.

Mine has napa or car quest gear oil in them... NO PROBLEMS so far. Had I had walmart gear oil.. i'd have used it... A couple of my tractors have walmart gear oil.. no explosions yet.

Just go back from Walmart and checked out their oil. They actually carry as others have mentioned, Rotella and Delvac 1300, but of course were out of the Delvac. Did see their 85w140 gear lube, but could not bring myself to buy it. For a few bucks more I think I will get the TSC brand Travelers. I have used their gear oil in my log splitter w/o problems.

Sound guy, thanks for the specs on the cutters. I contacted JD and have to go through their publications dept to get a manual. Will get around to that sometime.

Just like with engine oil you get what you pay for. There are varying qualities of gear oil. For the best 85W/140 gear oil I would recomend either TRC's 890 Vari-Purpose or 790 Sure Universal. The 790 exceeds in high heat applications and does a great job of lowering operating temps. The 890's claim to fame is that it is a very cohesive (stringy) gear oil with superb water resistance.

Get it on ebay / amazon .. i got mine for 22$ shipped.. vs the ? 90$ JD wanted...

walmart and tsc get oil from the same place. the last time i checked, tsc oil had warrens trademark on the bottom of the jug. warren also owns coastal unilube

Bob is the oil guy is the best place to get this type of information. Search and get all the info you need. Walmart oil is just good oil sold in their name. Its the additives that make the difference. I use all Wally oil and never a problem, but I follow oil change recommendations.

I bought the Walmart brand. The actually had Rotella 85w 140. It was $4 for a quart and the Walmart brand was $8+ for a gallon. Ran mowers hard all day, no problems.
