I've been looking at the 1529, 1532 and 1533 w/ FEL and the shuttle transmissions.

What are the differences between the 8 and 12 transmissions? Is it just a matter of having more gears in closer ratios? Do they operate in the same manner? Are they similar to operate, both operational and mechanically? Would getting the 1533 w/ the 12x12 give me that much more pleasure? :)

Thanks for any feedback. I've got 4.5 acres with landscaping, dirt work, tree removal, snow and just messin' around type work.

Any AGCO/Massey dealers on here, feel free to shoot me some deals! It seams my local Massey dealers are a bit under-represented! Have trailer, will travel...

It probably depends on what your dimensions of pleasure are.

You can probably get most of the info you asked about from the manufacturer's web site and MY guess is that you would either have more gears to cover the same range, so they would be closer (nice), or you would have the extra 4 in an extra low range (creeper), also nice if you will be doing ground engaging work.

Having said that I admit to having a 12x12 that I rarely use above 2nd 2nd, I only ever use the 3rd range on the road and of course that is very rare.
See if you can get a .pdf of the owner's manuals from the manufacturer's web site, mine has it and there is a table of forward speeds in each gear at 540 PTO speed.

Flepsen, the differences between the synchro shuttle and the power shuttle are pretty simple...the 8X8 synchro is a shift lever on the left side of the column and you have to clutch whenever you want to go from forward to reverse. With the power shuttle, you do not have to clutch from forward to reverse. The power shuttle is 12X12 with 4 gears under 1mph, good for tilling, low end torque and so forth. I'm more of a fan of the power shuttle, but the 1532 is growing in popularity at our dealership. As far as deals go, Massey's 0% for 72 months financing is pretty good right now. Where in NE are you located, if you are in my area I would more than happy to help you out....!

Thanks for the replys. I'm in SE Nebraska. I was 75 miles North of me yesterday looking at a 1533, which I'd never considered over the 1532. The bit more weight and HP and much better rear weight capability and three point telescoping made me start to consider it. The massey dealer locater list a few places that don't make an effort to have anything red on the lot, and as I mentioned earlier, 75 miles finally got my eyes on a piece of iron. I'd like to make a move on a unit by mid April, and I believe Massy's 0-72 ends March 31.

I wouldn't mind clutching myself with the 8x8. Is the 12x12 set up with hydraulic clutches or a torque converter of some sorts to enable frw/rev shifting?

gpflepsen, You mentioned "landscaping" does this include finish mowing?
If it does you may want to consider the 12x12 over the 8x8 for this reason alone...
I have the 8x8 and when finish mowing I have found the low range 4th gear to be slower than I would like to travel while mowing and hi range 1st gear is too fast if your running the blades at 540 pto speed and if you run them slower to give yourself a more comfortable ground speed your blades better be sharp...
It bothered me so much I ended up buying a Zero turn for mowing

In my experience the more gears the better. However, I know you can get by fine with the 8x8 (heck, most old tractors only had 4 forward gears) but the 12x12 gives you the ability to better match ground speed to the task at hand. I think you would be fine with the 8x8 and would only jump up the the 12x12 if you saw the major need for those 4 extra gears or if the price wasn't that much more.

For my farm I will never intentionally buy another 8x8 tranny unless the price was too good to pass on. My next tractor is most likely going to have the 32x16 dual command tranny. You can never have too many gears is my take on it.
