The 12v coil is bad on my 8N. I have a high output "internally resisted" Accel coil from an old muscle car that is still good. Can I use it or is the out put too great? Thanks for the help.

The first question is, "What is the output of your excel coil?" Or what is the part number on it?
The part number from Napa is IC14 for a one year warranty or IC14sb for a lifetime warranty.
The price tag will set you back 20 dollars or so. Then you won't have to worry about the next thing in your circuit being overloaded.

Usually coils say they require an external resistor or they don't. But i have read anything personally that says there is and internal resistor in the coil. Maybe true, but I have not run access it. If you have one please post the part #

The Accel coil will work but you must first determine what current flow is through the coil with it running. Anything above 4 amps will overheat the coil. Add resistance as dictated by your test results.

get the ic14sb coil.. it's about a 16$ coil.. needs no resisotr.

I'd like to know what coil you have right now that you THINK has a resistor in it...

It is an old Accel coil off a small block chevrolet. I am trying to decipher the writing on it, it looks as if it says "internal resistor" on the side, right under where it says accel. Weird coil, never seen one like it before. It is the same size as the one I took off the tractor and still works. The nearest auto parts store is about 30 miles from me, trying to save a trip. I have never encountered a coil with a resistor in it, just ones that require an external resistor or no resistor. I'll see if I can get a pic of it posted.

Sorry guys. I edited my post. The coil that is bad is not the one with the "internal resistor" writing on it. The Accel coil has it written just below the name. Weird, never seen it before.

FYI - There are no coils with an actual internal resistor. They engineer the resistance of the coil windings to limit current flow. Your coil likely reads something like, "No external resistor required" It's a matter of semantics but I just wanted to advise you on the specifics.

yep.. # of turns ont he primary, and wire diameter determine primary resistance.

The coil is pretty grimy, pulled it off a Chevelle that been sitting in my barn for years. The car runs fine, needs cosmetics and a good cleaning. I was in a pinch and was going to use the accel coil, just not sure if it was too "hot" for the 8N. I will pick up the one at napa. Thanks for the part #'s and advice. I have never heard of an internally resisted coil, thats why it had me confused. I'll give it a good cleaning and see what it says, but you are probably right.

I cleaned it real well in the parts washer this morning. You are correct, after cleaning all the grime and oil off it, it says clear as day " no external resistor required."
