8n ford\'s fan,s

Are their any 8n Ford tractor buff's on this vintage tractor forum? My old 8N has been with me for 30 plus years. It has several modifications. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who still uses and or loves the good old 8N. Please see attachment. Yugo

I been using them since 79. Rebuilt several from the ground up, Yours looks in good shape. I see you have added power assist steering and upgraded the oil filter and Alt. What's the hyd's near the rear axle?

Re: 8n ford\'s fan,s

Soundguy - I'm very impressed with your knowledge on Ford tractors. I enjoy reading your posts. But, 8N Ford stopped in 1951, and changed to overhead valve motors in 1952. Am I wrong? The power steering is a home brew - a hydrostat steering motor with a GM 70 - 80 power steering pump feeding it. No steering box anymore. If anyone is interested, we'll try to show a few more pictures of it. Works great. One fingered steering! Thanks again, Soundguy for all your posts. Yugo

Re: 8n ford\'s fan,s

The 8n was indeed produced into mid-late 52. Some 524,000 were made between late 1947 and late 52. Mine is # 504580.. a mid 52 unit. Even in 52 there were still changes an improvements being made to the 8n. In mid 52 they changed the reverse gear to make a lower reverse speed. If your 52 tranny casting has a 'bulge near your left foot/running board, then it included the lower gear. Previous N did not have this. In late 52 a few thousand of the aniversery 'golden jubilee' ( Model NAA ) tractors were produced.. 53 was officially the ford 50 year aniversery.. and all 53 NAA were also dubbed 'golden jubilee'. In 54 the extra name was dropped and the models were just called NAA. Not much differenc ebetween a jubilee and NAA.. nose badge.. location of the serial number on some of the early 53's ( engine as opposed to beside the starter ). Pilot bushing instead of a bearing on the early 53 clutch.. etc. The 8n ( and 9n/2n ) use a 119.2 ci 'l-head' flat head engine. The naa used a 134 ci 'red tiger' ohv engine. Many of the hundred series shared that engine.. a 172ci engine was built on the same block casting as well. There was also a diesel version.. though the ci # escapes me at the moment.

So far I've restored a '46 ford 2n, '52 ford 8n, '54 ford NAA and '55 ford 660, 50 JD 'B', 66 IH cub.

My current victom is a '49 allis chalmers 'G'.

Neat idea for the power steering.

Re: 8n ford\'s fan,s

More pictures of the hydraulic system on your 8N would be great. Where is the pump?

Re: 8n ford\'s fan,s

jgbansee - The pump is below the tank and valves. It's driven by a electric starter motor. (sort of like the small truck's snow blades) It's not the best, but it does work well with small cylinders. We do have the mast and forks assembly mounted on the 3 point. It's a 2 stage, 2000 lb lift capacity. It goes about 12 feet high. It's a little more than the Ford really likes - must be very careful. Please see attachment. Yugo

Re: 8n ford\'s fan,s

I own an 8N which my Dad bought used in 1969 for 800.00. He had engine rebuilt, hydraulics repaired, and installed new tires about 1972. I sandblasted and painted it about 8 years ago... 5 years ago I converted to 12 volt and put in pointless ignition and high performance coil. Tractor is used about 10 times a year to drag logs and brush hog with Woods M-5. It's getting tired again....probably need a rebuild soon. I wonder what an engine rebuild kit goes for these days.
