My dad just got a 1949 8n that's been sitting for a long time, motor is not stuck still has anti freeze in it. My question is what vis engine oil and I think it takes non detergent oil, I'm not all familiar with Fords I spent 8 years working for John Deere so I could use the help, also what oils for the trans and diff, thanks Patrick

I recommend any 15W40 diesel spec oil such as Rotella. 6 quarts including filter. If it's crudded up or the previous owner used non detergent oil, get 3-4 oil filters and the cheapest High Detergent oil you can find and change it as soon as the oil turns black.

Oil Filter Part Numbers
Fram C3, C3-P
NAPA Gold 1010
Motorcraft FL 144
Baldwin P40
Carquest 85010
Fleetguard LF574
Wix 51010
Purolater L20110 or L20701

The transmission, lift and differential share a common sump with three separate drain plugs, start at the back and work your way forward. The 8N hydraulic pump has yellow metal (generically, copper brass, bronze) GL1, GL3, GL4 or GL5/MT1 rating stating yellow metal safe. NAPA part number 65-205 for 90w GL1. Tractor Supply and some Wal-Mart’s carry GL5 that are yellow metal safe.

Fill location is beside the gear shifter. Lots of folks just dump in 5 gallons - This could overfill and force oil past the trumpet seals onto the brakes. Instead, pull the bottom bolt from the dip stick cover and add oil until it comes out of the bolt hole.

It's your money but I've never been overly impressed with TSC's parts - The oil is okay but anything else I needed, I'd get from Just8N's. Google the name for more info. Nice folks and the best parts you'll find.

ditto 1000% what DB said.

all counts. 15w40 oil.. and the tsc parts. some of them are ok.. but the tisco points are kinda cheap.

forget about using non detergent oil.

this isn't 1948

on a non crankcase sump ( trans, diff, hyds, steering box, final drive..e tc ) I flush with diesel, atf and alcohol. if a pump is involved.. up the atf part of the mix.

on a crankcase.. atf and oil only..
