8N question (electrical)

I have an 8N tractor that I inherited (early 50S model) and recently got it running. I just put a new 8V battery in it (advice from TSC worker) but it's drawing down the battery instead of charging it. I not a mechanic, nor do I have a lot of diagnostic equip., so can somebody explain what's up in simple tearms?

You have a 6 volt charging system that may or may not be working.
In either event, it won't keep an 8 volt battery charged.

Rick is right, you can not charge an 8 volt battery with a 6 volt generator even if it's working. Eight volt battery has about 2.1 volts per cell for a total of about 8.4 static volts.
You are going to have a charging voltage that is above 8.4 volts to charge this battery.
EG, a 12 volt charging system runs at 13.8 to 14.8 volts as a norm.
Bottom line, unless you can crank your charging voltage (adjustable voltage regulator) up to 9 to 10.5 volts you won't be able to charge your 8 volt battery.

Are you certain that the tractor has not been converted over to a 12V system??

Your best bet is to go with 12 volt your starter will take. You need a GM two wire ALT. and resistor the 12 volt wiring is easy to do for help go here How-To's best place for help with old fords. Then it will start right

I guess I'll be going back to TSC and have a discussion about returning the 8v and picking up the 6v that I originally stopped in about.

Like the others stated are you sure its not converted to 12 volt? Many have been. I converted my 861, well my mechanic did, but was very easy. 12v alternator, a new coil, and new light bulbs were about it. Spins the starter over like a champ.

If he had an 8 volt battery installed with a working 12 volt charging system, at a minimum the battery would be boiled out all over the place. No mention was made of anything like that.

If you still have a generator you might need to turn up the regulator to get more voltage. I haven't dealt with generator systems in years but I remember there were ajustments.
I had a 8-N and a 9-N both were converted to 12V. They sure do start better with a 6V starter.

Only a few of the N gennies had adjustments on back.. the stock 8n genny was a 2 brush job using a vibrating regulator.. while you can tweak them.. it's mostly a lost art.

He needs to go get that 6v battery.. and the TSC guy needs to stick to selling lawnmowers..
