Due to a dangerous and stupid loading mistake, I need to replace the right rear axle shaft. How is the shaft held in? Do I just remove a retainer plate or is there some internal retaining clip I have to take off first?

I'm guessing that you ned to pull the axle trumpet, as you might as well replace the oil seal(s) while you are in there. Old style has 1 seal.. new style has 2 seals. Axles aren't interchangeable.. so you need to know the year of your tractor, which can be found via serial number.
the N board over at ytmag.com has tons of N-formation on topics just like this.

after doing a bit more research.. I think it is a floating axle.. meaning.. remove the big axle nut.. remover brake hub, etc.. and i think you will be able to remove axle without removing trumpet.
