I have a 9-N. I put a new battery in, had the generator rebuilt and it seemed to solve my starting problem. Then I left it sit for a couple weeks and now I'm having trouble starting it. I have to jump it to get it started. It seems like the generator is charging, according to the guage, but when I turn it off ,I can't get it started without jumping it again. It's a 6 volt system. Battery and generator seem to be good. Any thoughts? Also when I go to start it all I get is a sound like something is shorting out. (One little snap).

If I recall- they are a positive ground system. Sounds like the starter or silinoid may have some gunk and may not be making good contact. Did you clean ALL contacts concerning the battery- starter?

Like I said, new battery, battery cable and everything seems to be clean. Thank's. Bob.

2 possibilities, one is that the battery is hooked up backwards with the neg. pole grounded. The other is a bare wire that is causing a short and draining the battery.

Ok.. bat should be p-ground. cables should be heavy 1-0 cables.. not wimpy 4ga 12v cables.

I like to loosen the 2 long starter bolts and slide the starte out 3/8 inch ( not to far or you will loose the captive brushes, then learn to curse so bad that a sailer will run crying! while you get the brushes captive again.)
take a piece of emory cloth and clean the flange a bit and the mounting barel of the starter for a good ground contact.

Now.. charge the battery.

now start her up.. what's the ammeter say?

what's a voltmeter across the battery say while running at mid throttle, vs a reading taken before running.

Have you adjusted the 3rd brush up to get a higher reading on the ampmenter?

if there is no positive reading onthe ampmenter you need to polarize the charge system by jumpering around the 2-pole coutout relay mounted on the back of the steering colum while the engine is off.. ( don't confuse this with the starter switch.. etc.. )
