Tractor
John Deere 4500 and Mule 3010 (gas)
Gearmore D40 Post Hole Digger came with used JD 4500 tractor I recently bought, already been thru all filters and fluids on the 4500. Plan to change the lube in PHD before I use it, lived outside, found online owner's manual and it calls for SAE# 140 multigear lube. However, auto supply places here appear to only sell #90-140 (might be 85-140....memory). Any issues using the 90-140?

It's probably 85-140...and I don't see any problem using it in a PHD. Actually, the manual may have a typo because it states use 140 (which would be a straight weight) followed by multi, which would indicate a multi viscosity lube. It's kind of contradictory in the terminology, but I wouldn't be too concerned. 85w-140 will be just fine.

Manual called for multigear lube in 140# (straight). Never heard of "multigear" lube so I did some reading and believe it is good for either GL4 or 5 service. Curious about that part in addition to using 85-140 where 140 is called for. I suspect 85-140 is fine, but now I am hung up on the "multgear" part.

I suppose that with the age of the PHD, what the manual is referring to could be a "multi purpose gear lube" in a straight 140 weight. In which case I still would think a 85-140 would be okay. Probably better than the used motor oil and sawdust a friend of mine uses in his. He's too cheap to make a gasket!!!

Did a little digging myself...turns out that "multigear" is trademarked by Chevron Texaco...however, their website doesn't list a straight weight Multigear 140...they're all multi weight 85-140 and EP 85-140's. I don't think your PHD would be more than 4-5 years old and I have a Leinbach L7300 about that age...I would think that they all use pretty standard gearboxes, but, when I checked the manual for mine it state "fill with 90W-gear oil". Are we confused yet???

I run 80W90 in mine. I agree, just change the oil. It has to be better than what is in there.

Just a funny side story. I heard of a guy who bought a used tractor and went to change all the fluids. He accidentally put in AW68 hydro oil, aprox 20 Weight, in the crank case and ran it for 100 hours and did not realize it until he went to do the next oil change. He had bought 5 gallon pales of oils and mixed them up so how. Tractor is still running fine 300 hours later. I would not recommend doing that but maybe it was good for the old machine to clean it out.

I can't imagine the 85-140 wil be a problem. you can always add a few shots of chassie grease in there.. or half a tube of nlgi 00# grease in with the oil if you feel the 85-140 is a tad too thin.
