\'93 Dodge Dakota \"riddle\"

I have a '93 Dodge Dakota V-6 standard transmission. I bought it new that many years ago. Within a few years, but out of warranty, the fuel gauge stopped working. It did OK to about a half-tank (tank size = 15 gallons), then would drop to zero. I explored having it fixed, but it seemed like it was more trouble than it was worth. So, I've kept track of the mileage and make sure to fill it by 240 miles or so. This has worked relaibly for many years...until recently.

The truck started running roughly over the winter. Starting, especially in cold weather could be (but wasn't necessarily) difficult. Again in cold weather, the heater wouldn't come to temperature (but would in warmer weather). Occassionally it would backfire on starting or while driving. It would lurch periodically going up the hills. So a couple weeks ago I took it to a highly recommended garage close by. They did a tune up and cleaned the injector rails, and it ran fine...for a day.

I took it to town that day. It ran fine for the 12-15 miles I drove it--up hills, through stop & go traffic, etc. After it sat for about an hour at one of my stops, it wouldn't start. The battery was fine. The starter was fine, but it sounded like it wasn't getting fuel. I checked the mileage; it was at about 180 miles. I thought maybe it didn't get set back to zero on the last fill-up, so bought a little gas (between 1 and 2 gallons) and poured it in the tank. Nothing doing. It still wouldn't start. So, I had it towed by flatbed to the garage that worked on it. They went all through it and on a whim put about five more gallons of gas in. They said it started right up. Well I felt like a fool, but that's not uncommon, so I chalked up to experience and moved on. I filled the tank, zeroed the trip meter and thought life was good.

It ran fine for about a week. No problems whatsoever. Then the other morning, with about 140 miles on it, it wouldn't start. It sounded the same as before but just wouldn't start. It sat for most of the day before I started to wonder whether the fuel tank could be rusting or something such that the fuel line was plugged. Just for grins, I rocked the truck back and forth several times. It fired right up. I turned it off, let it sit a few minutes; again it started with no problem.

So, it's great for anti-theft, but this isn't too reliable. I don't know much about fuel tanks. Is it reasonable that it's corroding or something and small pieces are coming off it and blocking intake to the fuel line? Because it seems to run well when it does start, I'm thinking the problem is more of a coincidence with the work done by the garage and that's not really a player, but I don't know.

Does anyone have any ideas about what's happening with my trusted and usually trustworthy Dakota?

A friend of mine has a similar truck but I can't remember what year. He had the same problem starting and finally found that the computer was flaky. Try tapping the computer module while trying to crank her over and see if it helps. May need a new computer if it's the same truck I'm thinking of.

As far as the fuel gauge. It sounds like a bad sending unit in the tank. The other problems could be a bad sensor such as O2, Mapp, etc. Do you have any check engine light or any way to check engine codes? It's also possible a frayed wired may be causing intermittant problems from a sensor.

MY 89 did the same thing. It turned out to be a rusty pick up coil, which is easy to check.Take off the distributer cap and rotor button. IF its rusty in there use some emery cloth and clean it up.If i recall theres a couple screws and it lifts right out. I suspected the fuel pump and i was wrong. On some vehicles you can here the pump whirr by listening in the gas cap with the key on.This is not true with the DAKOTA,the fuel pump only comes on if its calling for fuel.If its back fireing id say its trying to burn off excess fuel.Id suspect electrical-pick up coil,or plug wires, cap and roter.Im a only a backyard mechanic, but ive been down this road with my old DAKOTA.

A '93 with the original fuel pump? That's one of many parts I was replacing at least every year! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Rust is possible but not probable, as you have a plastic tank. You might have picked up a little water though, so you might try a little dry gas.
However, you're describing symptoms of a failing fuel pump., especially since it seems to happen when you're low on fuel. The gasoline acts as a heat sink, and keeps the pump running cooler. When the tank gets low the pump is partially exposed and runshgotter.
Next time it won't start, try tapping on the tank while someone cranks the starter (Vehicle in Neutral, parking brake set) Sometimes this will be enough to get it started.
You might also consider having the pump pressure tested, or it's possible to check it with a continuity meter.

Incidently the fuel pump assembly includes a new sending unit for your gauge; if you do end up replacing the pump you'll have to get used to a working fuel gauge. (Based on experience, I'd pay a little extra and go with OEM for the pump.)

If that IS the problem and you choose to change it yourself there are 2 ways of doing this. You can drop the tank, and wrestle it out fro under the truck; or unbolt the bed and raise the front of that. I've done it both ways, and have found it easier to pull the bed.

Actually there is a third way, which is handiest of all; put a dump kit in. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: \'93 Dodge Dakota \"riddle\"

I'd go with JstPssng's recomendations, sounds like he is right on here.....

I would also recomend listening for the pump to cycle on when the ignitionn is first turned to the run possition.. This might be easier with a helper and you under the truck by the tank..If you dont hear anything, smack the tank and try it again..

Re: \'93 Dodge Dakota \"riddle\"

Yep, fuel pump is going bad. When the tank is full the pressure from the weight of the gas is helping push fuel through the pump. As volume of gas decreases the pump has to work harder and just can't do it.

Re: \'93 Dodge Dakota \"riddle\"

A friend of mine is working together with a man that keeps bragging of everything he owns. The car always starts, he has the best lawn mower in the world and so on. He comes to work every day on a small motorcycle, the best bike in the world, and he tells everybody how little gas it consumes, almost nothing!!!
What he does not know is that every day his co workers fills the tank with gas, not much, but enough to keep the bike running ten times the milage it should have before tanking. Everybody he works with knows this, but he has not discovred it yet, he still keeps bragging, telling everyone how economic his little bike is!

1948berg:

When do they start siphoning a little gas out each day? It could really confuse the fellow.

Or add one week and remove the next week?

Sounds like this could be a real project! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Man, I'd like to work with that co worker... I could use some "really good" gas mileage... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
