I have a 955 with loader and cab. I am looking at buying a 3pt brush mower. I will be clearing land and old hay field with it.

I have looked at the 5' Rhino and King Kutter models. The rhino is considerably heavier at around 850 pounds. Is this too much weight for the 3pt you think? I know it states it can lift around 950, but I am a little worried it will be too much for the tractor.

Anyone have any size opinions on the 4' and 5' models for the 955?

Thank you

When my 955 wouldn't lift the load I added a small lift assist cylinder. It worked like a charm. When I traded the tractor in the dealer wasn't interested though. I still have all the parts.

Do you really have to lift it up ? These are generally 1 wheel trailers. You can march it aywhere you want to go. I'd go for a 6 footer. Your loader will 'pick it up' if all you want to do is sharpen blades or paint the underside or stand it on end for storage in the garage..

Shouldn't have any problem picking up the 5' rhino with your 955 3 ph, IMO.

PMS I'd be interested in what the "lift assist" cylinder is and how it was hooked up.. any pics ??

I will take some pictures after I find the cylinder. I'm pretty sure I know where it is and I saw the hydraulic fitting I welded up a few days ago. It might be a few days before I post anything.

Here is a 6' that weighs 820 pounds: 72 Inch Rotary Brush Cutter

anything 5' will work. Light to mid weight 6' will work........woods makes a couple 6' that would be fine. Woods also makes a HEAVY duty 6' that might be too much for the tractor. Had a 5' woods on my 855....worked fine.

beenthere I promised you some pictures so here they are. I don't have any of the lift assist mounted on the 955 as I traded it for my 4410 in 2004.955 lift assist fitting.jpg
This is the fitting that I welded up to attach the hose to. There was a pipe thread? plug under the seat that I removed and screwed this fitting into. 955 life assist 1.jpg
This just shows how I drilled the bottom end of the hydraulic cylinder so that the fitting was facing the right direction. I don't remember where the bottom of the lift assist cylinder attached too. I do remember that I had it fastened to the tractor with a pin but I don't remember exactly where and there is no 955 close to go look at either. It was somewhere close to the attaching point for the lift arm.

This is just a picture of the whole cylinder. It came off of a swather reel lift. It's a single acting cylinder. I cut the end off which worked ok as the rod was hollow and as you'll see in the next picture that worked to my advantage.

This is where it gets a bit complicated. The stroke on the cylinder wasn't long enough so I added a link to let the end swivel. It still wasn't long enough so I slotted the one rod and put a roll pin through so that everything wouldn't fall apart. The large hole in the flat plate goes onto the three point hitch lift pin and can swivel there. The force of the lift assist was transferred to the three point hitch lift arm by the larger rod welded onto the flat plate. The small piece of angle iron was just there to help keep the flat plate from rotating out of place. The lift assist worked for about 7/8th's of the arc of the lift arm. Once the load was that high then the internal leverages were such that the tractor it's self had no problem lifting the load the rest of the way.

If you want more info just ask questions.

Just checked it out and the third and fourth pictures should be switched. I'm sure you guys will figure it out.

I would think a 5' cutter would be perfect. Rhino, LandPride, and Bush Hog are well built, but I have had excellent luck with the two KingKutters I've owned. I cut 8' tall brush with a 4' KingKutter and a 15hp Shibaura tractor. I later had a 5' KingKutter for my 24hp John Deere 850. I never had a speck of trouble other than unraveling the occasional snag of barbed wire.
