98-01 Dodge Ram 2500-3500 cummins isb 5.9l diesel engine built with a pattern 53 engine block. How many of you have seen engine block failures with these such as cracks on passenger side causing coolant leaks? :anyone:

I have not seen that ... I did get a notice about a class action lawsuit regarding this.

I've never seen it, but have heard about it. I think it is repairable.
Do you have the problem ?
It's one of 2 known problems with Cummins 5.9 engine, that and the killer dowel pin.
Both affected a small percentage of engines, but there is nothing else to bash a Cummins for, so it does get mentioned often.

I know of one. It was welded and traded ASAP.

Don't know why it would need to be traded ASAP.
Cummins owned up to it and from what I understand, it would never lead to a catastrophic failure (unless you never replaced the coolant lost) Was basically a low pressure coolant leak, through an otherwise robust casting.
That's what I heard, I may not have the whole storey
The fact that it could be repaired tells you something about that block IMO.

I also received a notice about the class action lawsuit. I do have one of these trucks and just curious how many of these engines have developed this problem.

are you kidding?... somebody sent you recent info on a class action lawsuit of a 13-14 year old cylinder block???? It was only the 1998-1999 year models that had the potential to fail....
There are several repair methods for repairing the block...

I think that went on up to the 2001 year also...
Dad has a 2001, but has never gotten up underneath it to check to see which casting he has. I recently told him about the "53" block, and where they were cracking.
His truck doesn't have 40,000 miles on it yet, so that 12 year old block should be like new.

Those owners of a Cummins 24v ISB engine in a 1998-2001 model year vehicle. This does not only affect Dodge Rams. The 53 block was also used in medium duty trucks from different manufacturers, mobile homes, public school buses and mass transportation buses.
