I have a 98 John Deere Gator Diesel that has starting problems. It will turn over and spin just fine but will not always crank. Finally took it to the dealership and after a month I got it back. Diagnosis was a some corrosion on the starter solenoid connection. We drove it on the trailer and brought it home. Cranked it up and drove it off the trailer and around the yard for about 2 minutes and then cut it off. Tried to crank it back up 5 minutes later and it's doing the same thing. Turns over but will not fire up. I had a feeling while at the dealership that they really were not sure what was wrong. I think i was correct. Any suggestions would be helpful.

If it turns over, it has nothing to do with the solenoid.

My boss has a diesel Mule that would run for a bit then stutter and die. After a lot of tribulation, I found that the suction tube in the fuel tank was clogged, dirty and wouldn't let fuel pass.

Lol.. IF it was CRANKING.. it surely wasnt the starter solenoid.. sorry, i had to laugh at that one..
Loosen the line going into the injection pump before cranking it.. Then while cranking, look at the loosened line & SEE IF there is air or fuel..
U want ALL FUEL & NO AIR.. Those engines have an electric supply pump on them.. MAKE SURE u HEAR it running, before u turn the key to start..
Then I think the path is thru a filter }which nobody changes} then to the injection pump..
There is also an electric shut off solenoid on the engine to kill the motor when u turn the key off, right.?
Find it & MAKE SURE its working when u turn the key on & off..
Good luck..
IF u have let it sit all winter long & just added "good fuel".?? U NOW HAVE a full tank of half crappy fuel..

This post should be locked at the top of all diesel's that won't start threads...

Thanks, thepumpguysc.

make sure the fuel shutoff solenoid is working correctly, or you can wind it over all day and it won't crank, shoot me your email, I have a PDF of the Deere Technical manual that may help you out now and/or in the future

Well I just got back from the farm and the gator cranked right up. I drove it around for about 10 minutes until it got warm enough for the fan to kick on and then cut it off. started it right back up immediately and then cut it off again. I then waited about 20 seconds and tried to start her again with no luck. Same thing. turning over but will not fire. it has also failed to crank when its been sitting all night so i don't know what to think.
