Price Check 990 Price check

I dropped by my not-so-local JD dealer Saturday morning and test drove a 990. Very nice machine; I like the no-frills setup. Here was the quote:

990 4WD R-4 16,825
430 loader 3,000
8B backhoe 7,500

I remember seeing a post somehwere (can't find it) on how much Deere dealers usually come off of list. Seems like I read that they will come off more on a tractor than the implements. This quote seems sort of backwards, although the salesman did say he'd "work with" me. The quote on the tractor is only $485 from list, or 97%. I don't think I should have to pay more than 85-87% of list, should I? I bought a mower from him 2 years ago and paid 88% of list.

The loader quote is quite low by comparison: $1,553 less, or 66%. Even if I get a set of pallet forks (which I intend to) for it, it'll still be a bit less than list.

He came off a whopping $293 on the backhoe. Seems like he should come off at least 10% on it. Is that unreasonable?

Any help or info would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, the 90 series tractors are priced very differently than the 4000 series. See what other 990 customers have to say here, but I'll bet they think you are ok with what your dealer is telling you. There is very little margin on those tractors.
To me, the loader and hoe prices are very fair, and I'm assuming they include installation and delivery. If not, that gives you something to "work with" him on.

Yes, I believe the 990's have different (lower) margins than other CUT's. The salesman I bought mine from didn't normally sell CUT's at my dealership (he normally sold snowmobiles and garden tractors), but he was a friend of mine and so handled my 990 for me. Not being familiar with all the rules for CUT's, he assumed he could give me the same discount as he could for other stuff. Turned out the 990 was the one machine he could NOT give me that discount on. Luckily for me the shop allowed the deal to go through, but my friend took more than a little heat for giving me that price.

From when I was shopping the #'s seem pretty similar. Dealing down is area dependant it seems. Here, they give you a #, you give them that amount of money and you get a tractor. If you dont, then no tractor. I didnt look at the gadget tractors, just the basic ones so I dont know if they would deal on those.

That is pretty brand generic although I think the Kub guy would have dealt a bit.

I liked the 990, but it was a bit more than I could spend. Otherwise it is a older pretty bulletproof design, similar to the 50's and 70's. Good machine if its like its predessors.

I priced a 990 with loader yesterday and the dealer quoted me $19866 over the phone with R1 tires. I figure that most dealers will budge some from the original quotes, as there are many people who purchase and expect to get the price down some.

I went shopping for tractors the other day and stopped first at my JD dealership. Drove both the 790 and 990 with FEL. Liked both but found it cumbersome to shift the gears and run the FEL all the time. I later went to my local Mahindra dealer and ended up buying the the Mahindra 3015 HST with FEL. This machine had more basic features and handled much better than the 790/990 with the standard gears.

I now have about 12 hours on this tractor and love it so far. Anyone else compare the Mahindra with the JD? Would love to hear your feedback.
